A New Face to TNTP, A Steady Hand in Creating Opportunities for Youth

Meet TNTP’s new Senior Vice President of Strategy, Policy, and External Affairs

TNTP, a national nonprofit founded by teachers, works to end the injustice of educational inequality by providing excellent teachers to the students who need them most and by advancing policies and practices that ensure effective teaching in every classroom.  For the past 25 years, TNTP has fought for education policies and practices that directly improve the quality of education available to students in marginalized communities. They currently work with more than 300 school systems across 35 states.  In 2022, TNTP collaborated with Edgility Consulting to find their new Senior VP of Strategy, Policy, and External Affairs. TNTP was searching for someone committed to its mission of improving equity and opportunity for students with a strong track record of aligning vision and stakeholders to meet ambitious goals.

As a leader at two nationally-known nonprofits, Julie Shapiro stood out with the experience to lead TNTP’s efforts in strategy, policy, community coalitions, and public affairs.

A Harvard University alum with a master’s degree in public policy, Julie built her career as a leader who advances ideas that improve opportunities for children, families, and youth. With expertise ranging from K-12 education to workforce readiness and college access, she is the perfect match for TNTP’s mobility-focused goals.  As a seasoned nonprofit leader, Julie brings deep experience in strategic growth, innovation, and partnership development to her new role. In her 10-year tenure as Executive Director of The Door, a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive youth development services to 11,000 New York City youth annually, Julie spearheaded a decade of growth in every program area, more than tripling the operating budget from $10.5 million to $36 million.  Under Julie’s leadership, The Door launched Broome Street Academy, New York City’s only charter high school that prioritizes foster care and homeless youth, added two supportive housing sites, significantly increased its legal services for immigrant youth, and expanded career and education services to the South Bronx with the Bronx Youth Center.   Julie also served as CEO of The Fund for Public Schools, an organization working between the NYC Department of Education, the philanthropic community, private industry, and nonprofits to create innovative projects, speed the growth of promising initiatives, and respond to the ever-changing challenges facing schools in New York City. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Fund helped reopen the largest school system in the country and raised $25M for recovery efforts.  In her two and a half years at The Fund, Julie and her team raised $80M and established many public-private partnerships to support NYC’s 1,800 public schools and 1.1 million students.  With nearly 13 years of experience leading education-focused nonprofits, it was apparent that she would be a strong fit for the role at TNTP. The selection process for the Senior Vice President role was highly competitive, with more than 1000 applicants, but Julie’s experience and deep commitment to equity set her apart. Her personal and professional alignment with TNTP’s inclusive culture and mission will be an asset in TNTP’s next decade of strategic growth and impact in service of students.  Join us in congratulating TNTP and Julie on this wonderful partnership!
