Getting to know the best of the best WRs in the Big Ten Conference this season

The month of July is now here, which means we are finally entering the preseason for college football. While media days are still a couple of weeks away, players across the nation are flocking back to campus and starting to ramp things up, getting prepared for fall camp to begin.

It will be a historic season of college football across the nation, with conference realignment and an expanded College Football Playoff shaking up the landscape. It will also be a different season for the Oregon Ducks, who enter the Big Ten Conference for the first time starting on August 1. To help forecast what Dan Lanning and his team will see this year, and preview the opponents on Oregon’s schedule and beyond, we’re going to go through all of the major position groups and detail the players who Duck fans need to know about, and why.

——————————————————————————————————————————————

When you look at the Big Ten Conference, the quarterbacks get most of the attention. After that, a great deal of the focus turns to the running backs, and Quinshon Judkins and Jordan James steal the show.

But don’t let that cause you to overlook the receivers.

Ten wide receivers from the Big Ten were selected in the 2024 NFL draft, and the talent level is only expected to increase this year with the additions of Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington. So are you looking to dive into a preview and figure out which names you need to know of going into the 2024 season?

We’ve got you covered.

Zakhari Franklin — Illinois Fighting Illini

Danny Wild-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 226 catches, 3,386 yards, 38 TDs

Analysis: Some may be shocked to find out that Zakhari Franklin, the former standout WR at UTSA who was a hot commodity on the transfer portal, is at Illinois. After spending a year at Ole Miss in 2023, Franklin hopped back into the portal and landed with the Fighting Illini. He is undoubtedly one of the most tantalizing receivers in the Big Ten, but can Luke Altmyer can get him the ball enough.

Pat Bryant — Illinois Fighting Illini

Ron Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 83 catches, 1,111 yards, 9 TDs

Analysis: Pat Bryant now has to compete with Zakhari Franklin for targets, but he’s proven to be a solid target at Illinois and should remain so in 2024 as long as there are enough passes to go around.

Myles Price — Indiana Hoosiers

Syndication: Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Career Stats: 161 catches, 1,751 yards, 10 TDs

Analysis: Oregon Duck fans may remember the name Myles Price. They had to contend with his unique physical abilities last year when facing Texas Tech. Price is now with the Indiana Hoosiers and looks to be the No. 1 option for new quarterback Curtis Rourke.

Elijah Sarratt — Indiana Hoosiers

Syndication: The Herald-Times

Career Stats: 82 catches, 1,191 yards, 8 TDs

Analysis: Elijah Sarratt is a relatively unknown name on the national level, but his production has been strong with the Hoosiers. There will be a question of target share this season with Myles Price in the offense, but we will see what Curt Cignetti can cook up in Bloomington.

Tai Felton — Maryland Terrapins

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 76 catches, 1,083 yards, 8 TDs

Analysis: The Maryland Terrapins have a couple of strong receivers; Felton is one of them. The biggest question will be how the new offense looks with a new starting QB. Whoever wins the job will have a solid target to throw to in Felton.

Kaden Prather — Maryland Terrapins

Joseph Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 106 catches, 1,342 yards, 8 TDs

Analysis: After spending his first two seasons with West Virginia, Prather came to Maryland and had five touchdowns and solid production in 2023. He looks to continue that in 2024 with a new QB.

Elijah Spencer — Minnesota Golden Gophers

Robert Goddin-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 94 catches, 1,389 yards, 18 TDs

Analysis: The stats are certainly impressive for Spencer, but when you consider most of them came from his time at Charlotte, it tempers expectations. Spencer had nine catches for 65 yards and three TDs in 2023, but we’ve seen what he is capable of before, so he is a name to know going forward.

Daniel Jackson — Minnesota Golden Gophers

Nick Wosika-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 133 catches, 1,842 yards, 14 TDs

Analysis: Daniel Jackson has had a long and successful career with the Golden Gophers; he is entering his fifth season with the team. Assuming he can keep up his level of production, he should be someone you’re hearing about on Saturdays this fall.

Jahmal Banks — Nebraska Cornhuskers

Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 107 catches, 1,404 yards, 13 TDs

Analysis: Banks was a very solid receiver at Wake Forest, getting all 13 of his career touchdowns over the past two years. Now he looks to be one of the top targets for freshman QB Dylan Raiola and lead the charge for the new-look Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Isaiah Neyor — Nebraska Cornhuskers

Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 53 catches, 1,140 yards, 12 TDs

Analysis: Neyor is another player who saw Dylan Raiola commit to Nebraska and chose to follow him, transferring from Texas in hopes of being the guy with the Cornhuskers. He had significant production at Wyoming early in his career, but he only played one game in Austin last year, so we’ll see how quickly he can get back into form.

Evan Stewart — Oregon Ducks

Career Stats: 91 catches, 1,163 yards, 6 TDs

Analysis: When it comes to ceilings in the 2024 season, there may be no higher one than that of Evan Stewart, who comes from a tough situation at Texas A&M to one of the best situations in the nation at Oregon. While Stewart will have to fight for targets in a stacked offense, he is expected to be one of the best WRs in the nation this year.

Tez Johnson — Oregon Ducks

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 227 catches, 2,991 yards, 18 TDs

Analysis: We saw last year what Tez Johnson can do in the Oregon offense, and it’s pretty remarkable. With Troy Franklin off to the NFL, Johnson should take over as the No. 1 in Eugene and likely have another massive year.

Emeka Egbuka — Ohio State Buckeyes

Syndication: The Columbus Dispatch

Career Stats: 124 catches, 1,857 yards, 14 TDs

Analysis: Egbuka has had to fight for targets throughout his entire career at Ohio State, playing alongside Marvin Harrison, Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson among others. Now he is the de facto No. 1 option, so we’ll see how big of a year he can have.

Jeremiah Smith — Ohio State Buckeyes

Syndication: The Columbus Dispatch

Career Stats: N/A

Analysis: Marvin Harrison left Ohio State as the undisputed best WR in the nation, and Ohio State may be welcoming the next best WR in the nation: Jeremiah Smith. The true freshman has been tantalizing so far; he was ranked as the No. 1 player overall in the 2024 class. It’s going to be fascinating to see how quickly he can make an impact because the traits to be dominant are there.

Julian Fleming — Penn State Nittany Lions

Matthew O’Haren-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 79 catches, 963 yards, 7 TDs

Analysis: After being unable to carve out a major role at Ohio State, Fleming goes to Penn State where he looks like the No. 1 option in a passing offense that could have one of the better quarterbacks in the conference, Drew Allar.

Dymere Miller — Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Syndication: Asbury Park Press

Career Stats: 169 catches, 2,408 yards, 17 TDs

Analysis: Miller played for four seasons at Monmouth before transferring to Rutgers, where he put up crazy stats at a lower level of play. Now he joins the Big Ten and will look to keep up that level of production on a Rutgers offense that could surprise some people this year.

J. Michael Sturdivant — UCLA Bruins

Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 101 catches, 1,352 yards, 11 TDs

Analysis: Sturdivant had a strong start to his career with the California Golden Bears, and that continued last year with UCLA despite a struggling offense and inconsistent quarterback play. We will see how he can maintain production with UCLA’s current form in 2024, but he will be one of its best players from the outset.

Zachariah Branch — USC Trojans

Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 31 catches, 320 yards, 2 TDs

Analysis: The stats don’t paint Zachariah Branch as someone you need to know, but the sophomore at USC proved as a freshman that you need to be watching when he has the ball. We’ll see how Lincoln Riley schemes him into the offense going forward because this is a home run hitter who presents challenges for a defense.

Duce Robinson — USC Trojans

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 16 catches, 351 yards, 2 TDs

Analysis: The tight end turned WR is much like Zachariah Branch. Robinson may not have the stats that paint him as a threat, but his physical abilities and big stature make him someone you need to know about on Saturdays.

Jeremiah Hunter — Washington Huskies

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Career Stats: 144, 2,084 yards, 13 TDs

Analysis: Washington lost substantial talent at the WR position. Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan and Ja’Lynn Polk were drafted this year. Jeremiah Hunter comes over from Cal and looks to be the new No. 1 option for Will Rogers.

Bryson Green — Wisconsin Badgers

Syndication: Journal Sentinel

Career Stats: 80 catches, 1,203 yards, 9 TDs

Analysis: Green has had solid production throughout his career, the first two years of which came at Oklahoma State. He will try to be the No. 1 option for new Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke as the Badgers look to compete at the top level of the Big Ten Conference.
