An approach for qualitative shape and qualitative colour similarity matching is presented in this paper and a first approximation to its application to the assembly of tile ceramic mosaics is given. Qualitative models of shape and colour are used for describing each ceramic tile composing a mosaic. Matrices of similarity values between qualitative shape and qualitative colour parameters are obtained by analysing the conceptual neighbourhood diagrams obtained for each qualitative model. An algorithm for matching the ceramic tiles in the correct place of the mosaic which apply thresholds for shape and colour similarity is defined. It is important to point out that, our approach has been tested in a real application and promising results are obtained.
