A Novel Demodulation Method for CPM Signals in Satellite Communications

Published: 22 May 2024 Publication History

Abstract

This article focuses on the demodulation of Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) signals in satellite communications. From the perspective of simplifying the grid state, it discusses three demodulation methods: Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection, Per-Survivor Processing algorithm, and Virtual Indexes(h) Detection. The article also proposes a Soft Virtual Indexes(h) Detection based on the Virtual Indexes(h) Detection, which reduces the complexity of demodulation while minimizing performance loss. Simulation results show that the Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection algorithm has the best performance but the highest complexity. The Virtual Indexes(h) Detection algorithm achieves a reduction in demodulation complexity at the cost of performance. The Soft Virtual Indexes(h) Detection algorithm, on the other hand, offers a compromise between the Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection and Virtual Indexes(h) Detection algorithm, improving the demodulation performance of the latter while reducing complexity compared to Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection.
