College guidance counselor (abstract only)

An expert system for choosing a college has been developed using the INSIGHT 2+ rule-based tool on an AT-compatible microcomputer. This expert system uses three categories in the selection process: admissions data, including SAT score and class rank; the desired major; and personal preferences. The system uses the information to narrow down a list of colleges. At each stage, the user is given the option either to reduce the list through more questions or to choose directly from the list. The user can request various information about the colleges on the final list. Design and implementation issues will be discussed including a comparison with a database-oriented design alternative.
