Did you know that wind turbine surface codings and shells are rigorously tested for durability against rain before being put into operation? Our friends at R&D Test Systems has developed an advanced machine that simulates various rain intensities and droplet sizes to ensure the blades can withstand harsh weather conditions from rain. Just a little glimpse into the fascinating world of wind energy. Happy Friday! https://lnkd.in/d_9Fg4Un

Detecting Defects in Wind Turbine Drivetrains: A Key to Reducing Risk for Insurers and Risk Engineers When taking on a new policyholder, how can you ensure that the drivetrain is in good condition? Detecting defects in drivetrain components is crucial for minimizing risk. By using advanced analysis methods such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Cepstrum, we can identify distinct peaks at known defect frequencies, which indicate potential issues. The two plots below show Cepstrum plots of a healthy and a damaged drivetrain, respectively: The healthy drivetrain in the upper plot shows low-amplitude quefrencies (as they are called in cepstrum analysis), only displaying peaks at characteristic quefrencies. The defective drivetrain, in the lower plot, shows distinct high-amplitude peaks at known defect quefrencies, signalling the development of faults. Detecting these defects enables proactive maintenance, reducing the likelihood of costly failures and claims. Insurers and risk engineers can make informed decisions, ensuring they only take on well-maintained assets and minimize potential risks. Let’s make your next policyholder acquisition a secure and informed decision. Contact us here: https://lnkd.in/g3NppHGz or reach out to Simon Holte directly.

Some of the very interesting work Wind Power LAB is involved in to get a deeper understanding of the risks posed by lightning activity within wind farms.
🛰️⚡️How can we utilize the cutting-edge technology of space-based lightning detectors for assessing the lightning impact on wind turbines? Join my poster presentation today at 16:00 in the EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference 2024 🛰️ #EMSC2024, where I present the first results of the Thunderbolt project we work on at DTU Wind and Energy Systems. Co-authors: Andreas Christian Espersen, Charlotte Hasager Our research is funded by EUDP - Det Energiteknologiske Udviklings- og Demonstrationsprogram.
