Imagine a world in which AMR no longer poses a threat to the health of humans and animals, the environment, global food security and economic prosperity. This is our vision at the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions - ICARS. ICARS provides One Health intervention and implementation research support to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in their efforts to prevent and mitigate AMR. Through our activities, we enter into partnerships with LMICs to advance the implementation of their National Action Plans (NAPs). These partnerships involve projects through which we co-develop and test new solutions for AMR mitigation, translate existing evidence into action, all while supporting capacity and capability building in LMICs. Our work also extends to advocacy for the importance of Implementation Research as a means to deliver on the NAPs.

🌍 Project launched to address Antimicrobial Resistance in surgical procedures in Ghana 🇬🇭 📅 A new initiative was launched in Ghana to address antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) in surgical care. Led by the Ministry Of Health, Ghana and supported by ICARS, the project focuses on improving antibiotic use during surgery to help reduce the incidence of Surgical Site Infections (SSI) and enhance infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. 🎯 Key objectives: 🔹 Promote appropriate use of antibiotics in Surgical Antibiotic Prophylaxis (SAP) 🔹 Develop and implement sustainable interventions for IPC practices 🔹 Assess the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of these interventions to inform broader policy recommendations 📣 At the launch, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, Chief Director of the MoH, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to addressing AMR, emphasising the importance of collaboration in safeguarding essential medical treatments. 🔬 The project team has started work by pre-testing study tools, reviewing global resources such as the Global Point Prevalence Survey (PPS), SSI surveillance, and the IPC Assessment Framework (IPCAF) to adapt them to the local context. Updates on the project’s progress will follow as activities move forward! Read more ➡️ https://bit.ly/3TZ46KC

📖 Today's #MondayRead is a recently published article by Narmada Venkateswaran et al. emphasising the urgent need for improved data collection on livestock #AMR. 💡 The research synthesises global livestock AMR data from 2000 to 2020, examining key pathogens like Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. 🔍 Key findings include: ● Resistance to fluoroquinolones and macrolides in Staphylococcus aureus is a major concern in many countries, but fewer than 10% have reported relevant data. ● Only 48% of prioritised categories had collected data, with significant gaps in reporting on non-typhoidal Salmonella and other livestock species. 🌍 The authors call for countries to enhance their AMR data collection efforts. Strengthening these initiatives is vital for improving surveillance and intervention strategies, ultimately protecting both #publichealth and livestock welfare. 📊 This framework not only addresses current data gaps but can also adapt to emerging resistance trends, guiding effective decision-making in the mitigation of AMR. 🔗 Read more ➡️ https://bit.ly/4dFG91Q Global Burden of Animal Diseases, Narmada Venkateswaran, MPH (she/her), Lucien Swetschinski, Christina Fastl, Carlotta di Bari, Nicola Criscuolo, Ranya Mulchandani, Cheng Zhao, tomislav meštrović, Kevin Ikuta, Sara B., Lucy Coyne, João Afonso, Ben Huntington MRCVS PMP, Jonathan Rushton, Brecht Devleesschauwer, Benn Sartorius, Thomas Van Boeckel, David M. 💡 To enhance long-term, sustainable interventions that mitigate antimicrobial resistance (#AMR), ICARS is launching a new Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop a comprehensive guide on ensuring sustainable impact of AMR solutions across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. 🌱 Achieving #Sustainability in AMR interventions means ensuring solutions continue to deliver positive outcomes long after projects end. This RFP invites proposals to create a resource guide that provides an array of methodologies to assess sustainability, measure outcomes, and support the integration of AMR solutions into policies and broader systems. From policy integration and capacity building to financial independence, sustainable impact is key to scaling AMR interventions effectively. 📅 Proposals are being accepted from research institutions based in Africa until November 15, 2024. 📋 With a budget of $150,000 and a 12-month timeline, this is an exciting opportunity for LMIC-based researchers to shape the future of sustainable AMR interventions. 🔗 For more details ➡️ https://bit.ly/3ZQL6lb

Addressing AMR & Climate Change: a One Health approach 💭 Dr Sunday Ochonu Ochai Jr. (DVM, MSc, Ph.D), Science Advisor in AMR and Climate Change at ICARS, spoke on the critical link between antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) and climate change at the Climate and Health Regional Dialogue, co-hosted by the Ambassade de France en Thaïlande and Mahidol University. 🌍 AMR is intertwined with the triple planetary crisis—#ClimateChange, biodiversity loss, and pollution. In Southeast Asia, one of the most vulnerable regions, the climate crisis is accelerating the spread of drug-resistant infections. ♻️ A #OneHealth approach, recognising the interconnection between human, animal, plant, and environmental health, is key to addressing this challenge. 💡 In his intervention, Dr Ochai stressed the need to integrate AMR into global climate challenges, especially in livestock and aquaculture systems in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (#LMICs). He pointed out that climate change worsens risks to livestock, aquaculture, and public health, while accelerating AMR. He also highlighted the overlap between countries most vulnerable to climate change and those burdened by AMR, calling for climate-smart practices to address both issues and strengthen agri-food system resilience. 🎤 The session was chaired by Dr Tikiri Wijayathilaka, World Organisation for Animal Health.
