This morning at the #WorldAMRCongress in Philadelphia, Wes Kim of the American Society of Microbiology mentions the need for a multi pronged approach to tackle AMR: 1. novel therapeutics and vaccines for bacterial and fungal infections, 2. novel diagnostics to help better target antimicrobial therapy, 3. equitable data and knowledge exchange globally and 4. increased awareness and advocacy on AMR

Great having Annick Lenglet from The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) at The World Bank today giving an excellent presentation about the importantence of combatting AMR globally. Followed by fruitful remarks by my two great colleagues Naomi Rupasinghe and Clarisse Ingabire

🌎 ICARS was honoured to participate in the G20 2024 Brazil 4th Health Working Group Meeting Side Event on AMR, held in Natal. This event brought together global leaders, policymakers, and experts to accelerate progress against antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) through a #OneHealth approach, addressing human, animal, and environmental health. 🔍 Dr Kristina Osbjer, Senior Science Advisor in Veterinary Sciences at ICARS, presented insights on effective governance and financing strategies to support national and global efforts against AMR. Her contributions highlighted the critical role of coordinated, multi-sectoral actions to achieve meaningful progress. 💡 The event focused on key challenges in mitigating AMR, including the need for stronger surveillance, enhanced R&D, equitable access to antibiotics and diagnostics, and sustainable financing. Discussions highlighted innovative solutions to prevent drug-resistant infections, safeguard global food production, and ensure food security. 🤝 We thank the Ministry of Health Brazil, the World Health Organization, and the Global Leaders Group on AMR for providing a platform for sharing knowledge, building partnerships, and setting priorities ahead of the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR.

#ClimateChange is affecting human, animal, and environmental health, often contributing to the development of antimicrobial resistance (#AMR). 🌍 Shifts in environmental conditions are likely to increase the spread of diseases across humans, animals, and plants. Although the links between climate change, rising temperatures, infection spread, and AMR are complex and not yet fully understood, they pose a significant risk, particularly in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (#LMICs) where livestock and aquaculture systems are already vulnerable. 💡 To address this, The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) has launched a request for proposals for Intervention and Implementation Research Projects to mitigate these challenges. 📅 Proposals should be submitted by research organizations based in Low-and-Middle-Income Countries up until October 1, 2024. 🔗 More details ➡️ https://lnkd.in/evCCVk3Q

With her background in research, strategic partnership management, and project coordination, Jacqueline previously led a large-scale mental health project and has strong experience in innovative health solutions. She holds a Master’s in Global Health and is wrapping up her PhD in Public Health and Epidemiology.   Dr. Claudia Cobo Ángel is a Colombian veterinarian and epidemiologist specializing in the intersection of animal health, environmental sustainability, and AMR mitigation. 📚 Today's #MondayRead is the recently published guiding document on the FAO initiative to Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials for Sustainable Agrifood System Transformation (RENOFARM). Officially launched in April 2024, RENOFARM is grounded in the #OneHealth approach and FAO’s Action Plan on #AMR, focusing on enhancing productivity while promoting responsible antimicrobial use. The guidance document outlines how 100 countries can implement their National Action Plans on AMR. It emphasizes farm-level support through the Five Goods (5Gs) framework—Good Health Services, Good Production Practices, Good Alternatives, Good Connection, and Good Incentives—to ensure sustainable and healthy farming practices from farm to fork. A key component of RENOFARM is its commitment to training animal and plant health service providers and other experts, providing them with essential knowledge to address AMR effectively. Additionally, it aims for 80% of participating countries to contribute data to FAO’s InFARM platform, enhancing global antimicrobial resistance monitoring. Despite this, the current focus remains heavily on R&D for new antibiotics in higher-income regions, while essential infection prevention measures in LMICs receive insufficient attention. 💡 To effectively mitigate AMR, it's vital to address the context-specific conditions in LMICs and ensure that no country is left behind. Strengthening healthcare infrastructure and prioritizing local needs can help close the gap and enhance global AMR mitigation efforts.
