What is the state of Ireland’s Environment? How do we compare to our European neighbours? What do we need to do now, to ensure a healthy, prosperous, resilient future? Leena Yla-Mononen, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, highlighted the substantial challenges Europe faces to transition our systems to a sustainable trajectory. She highlighted the need to scale up our actions to deliver on the #EUGreenDeal and on sustainability transition. She also emphasised the interconnected nature of the environmental crises we are facing – but highlighted the ways in which they can be tackled together through a systemic approach. Her closing message was one of hope, saying she chooses to be optimistic about the fact that we can achieve the necessary changes. EPA Director General Laura Burke emphasised Ireland’s progress over the last 50 years but stressed that we need to scale up and speed up our actions to deliver on our commitments and meet the challenge of passing on a healthy environment to the next generation. Throughout the day we heard from experts and contributors to the flagship report: Andy Fanning, Dr Eimear Cotter, Mary Frances Rochford, Dr Jenny Deakin, Warren Phelan, Fiona ORourke, Prof. Brian Ó Gallachóir, Dr Wayne Trodd, Dr Hugh Feeley, Dr Robert Wilkes, Dr Aisling O'Connor, Patrick Kenny and Tony Dolan. Last month, #StormBoris 🌪️ left a trail of devastation across Central and Eastern Europe. The massive rainfall 🌧️ caused soils to saturate and rivers to overflow🌊, resulting in catastrophic #floods that cost lives, homes 🏠 and critical infrastructure. Below is a timelapse of the #CLMS soil water index product, showing how vast extents of European land were affected by extremely wet soils in this period. #SoilMoisture data such as these are crucial input for model predictions used in disaster prevention🚨, climate change mitigation 🌍 and water resource management. 💧 Check out the product here: https://lnkd.in/dgPa38ax

A small delegation led by our Executive Director Leena Yla-Mononen visited Italy this week. We had the pleasure of being hosted by Stefano Laporta and Maria Siclari of ISPRA of our Eionet network, with a focus on Italian Environmental information systems and closer exchanges and the Italian Eionet partners. The EEA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ISPRA on closer cooperation on Copernicus Land Monitoring modules.
