Our latest study concludes that the Danish authorities should reconsider the decision-making process for implementing rotavirus vaccination in the Danish immunisation programme to ensure alignment with World Health Organization recommendations and the practices of comparable national immunisation programmes. Rotavirus is a leading cause of severe diarrhoea in children under five. Despite the availability of effective and safe vaccines, these are not part of the Danish immunisation programme, while countries like Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK introduced rotavirus vaccination several years ago. Implementing rotavirus vaccination in Denmark could save at least DKK 32 million annually through reduced healthcare costs and fewer sick days. We estimate that vaccination could prevent over 1,700 hospitalisations, more than 13,000 general practitioner visits, and nearly 53,000 home treatments each year. Experiences from other Nordic countries show that participation in the immunisation programme remains high after the addition of rotavirus vaccination to the programmes. From a practical point of view, rotavirus vaccination can be integrated into the existing system without additional visits to general practitioners. You can find the study here: https://lnkd.in/d_h2UzmX To discuss our findings, contact our Healthcare & Life Sciences expert Nikolaj Siersbæk, Managing Economist, Ph.D. #copenhageneconomics #healthcare #rotavirus #vaccination #Denmark

Over the past year, the European Union has seen significant activity in competition enforcement, marked by notable decisions from the European Commission and landmark rulings by the EU courts. In that time, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR) came into force, with the Commission already demonstrating its intent to make full use of these tools. The Commission continues to use its traditional tools while novel, often non-horizontal, theories of harm and dynamic effects are becoming central in merger control, especially as deals in the digital sector face increased scrutiny. Economic analysis is crucial for understanding these theories of harm and the importance of quantitative analysis is generally growing as more data becomes available across sectors and data-intensive industries capture enforcers' attention. However, the Commission's draft Guidelines for #Article102 on exclusionary abuses raised concerns about moving away from rigorous, effect-based assessment. In this article for Concurrences’ e-Competitions Bulletin, we cover the main developments, including how: ● Increased attention to dynamic theories of harm in the context of digital markets requires the early involvement of economists. ● The Draft Guidelines on Article 102 may alter effects-based approaches in investigations of exclusionary abuses. ● State aid investigations continue to rely on economic and financial analysis. ● DMA and FSR are still in their early days and the role of economics going forward remains uncertain. We go over these developments in our foreword on the Special Issue on European Competition Law, which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/d4m_WQWG To discuss the article, contact the authors Federico De Michiel, Julia Wahl, Paulo Abecasis, and Tuomas Haanperä. Public enforcement of competition law in the #Nordics has remained active with several recent in-depth merger inquiries, antitrust investigations, and State aid cases. The Nordic countries share common policy objectives aiming at well-functioning markets and we observe national competition authorities across the region being empowered with new tools to carry out these objectives. Economics already plays a central role in competition enforcement in all five Nordic countries. It remains most pronounced in in-depth merger investigations and an increasing focus on an effects-based approach to antitrust suggests that economic analyses may become even more prominent in years to come. In this article for Concurrences’ e-Competitions Bulletin, we cover the main developments, including how: ● Competition authorities across the region show an appetite for investigating non-horizontal theories of harm. ● Economic analysis has played a significant role in various antitrust cases. ● Increasing State aid to support the green transition necessitates economic analysis. ● Legislative amendments are introduced and debated in the Nordics to ensure effective competition policy enforcement. In our latest Insight, we briefly discuss the CMA’s provisional findings, which come at a crucial time, in the midst of a heated policy debate in Europe about whether to allow for increased telecoms consolidation.
