With the FuelEU Maritime regulation being implemented in 2025, well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions are stepping into focus. To facilitate commercial charter agreements, shipowners need to document the compliance balance per charter period as the basis to manage the agreed compensation for the FuelEU balance. They also need to ensure that the sum of transactions throughout the year equals the total annual cost for compliance. In both cases, a single source of verified data is required. DNV's Emissions Connect is the robust, standardized yet flexible system to help you. It provides live emissions data feeds that are digitally reviewed daily, documented in verified statements and available for sharing across your value chain. DNV has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Hydrogenious LOHC Maritime for a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) release unit. The technology separates hydrogen from its organic carrier liquid for use in an onboard fuel cell. The approval marks an important step forward in the Norwegian technology organization’s hydrogen-powered vessel project, HyNjord, and will eventually be installed on Østenjø’s DNV-classed Edda Ferd ship for testing. Congratulations to all those involved in its development. Read more in TradeWinds: https://dnv.social/5Ot #maritime #hydrogen #energytransition

According to DNV's latest Energy Transition Outlook report, 2024 is the year that global emissions are likely to peak. However, the expected reduction in energy-related CO2 emissions in 2025 is marginal and uncertain, and unforeseen political or economic priorities may delay the peak by a year or two. Download the report and get more detail on how energy-related CO2 emissions are forecast to develop in the decades ahead: https://dnv.social/5Od #energytransition #emissions #decarbonisation

Efficiency is the most important near-term element of the maritime sector’s green transition. That was the message from our CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen as he spoke with The Maritime Executive about the options open to shipowners as they look to decarbonize. “I think the area these owners should focus on is energy efficiency,” said Knut. “Some of these measures are on the technology side, which requires capital investment, and some are on the operational side, which requires investment in the skills of the crew.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gTHdz768 #Shipping #EnergyEfficiency #Decarbonization

According to our latest Maritime Forecast to 2050, including a pooling mechanism in a compliance strategy can reduce the cost of decarbonization by 6%, if measured in total cost per tonne of GHG emission reductions. Our latest #maritimeimpact article explores the results of a pooling case study, investigating whether the pooling mechanism in the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation could trigger a sustainable business case for methanol-capable vessels utilizing full green-methanol capacity over a 10-year period. Within a pooling arrangement, early adopters of green fuels and technologies can benefit from selling excess emission units to non-compliant vessels. The article also examines the findings of various scenarios for future fuel mixes, including e-methanol, bio-LNG, and hydrogen. Read the full article to explore all insights in detail and understand how the maritime industry can navigate the path to a sustainable future. https://dnv.social/5NC #decarbonization #pooling #shipping

DNV recently published a statutory news article summarizing the 82nd session of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82). During this meeting, the committee continued its negotiation of greenhouse gas fuel intensity requirements, potentially in combination with a GHG pricing mechanism, introduced as part of a new net zero emissions framework. The members also discussed the adoption of regulations needed to designate the Norwegian Sea and Canadian Arctic as Emission Control Areas.
