Münster (iwr press service) - The use of solar energy in Germany continues to grow. From January to August 2024, new solar systems with an output of around 10,200 MW (previous year 2023: 10,100 MW) were already installed. This is the result of a current analysis of data from the market master data register (MaStR) of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) by the International Business Forum for Renewable Energies (IWR). In total, as of the end of August 2024, around 4.5 million solar systems with an installed output of around 93,200 MW were in operation in Germany (BNetzA data status: September 5, 2024). The federal government has thus already exceeded the solar expansion target for 2024. According to current market data, the solar boom in Germany is also unbroken in the current year. "If the trend continues until the end of 2024, then, as in the previous year, over a million new solar systems with an output of over 15,000 MW will be built," said IWR boss Dr. Norbert Allnoch in Münster. In terms of the total photovoltaic output installed in Germany, the 100,000 MW mark is still within reach, according to the IWR forecast, given the dynamic course of the year so far. This means that the federal government's 2024 expansion target of 88,000 MW (88 GW) of solar output in accordance with the expansion path for renewable energies (Section 4 EEG 2023) has already been exceeded ahead of schedule. Allnoch: "Even if the solar expansion in Germany currently seems high at around 15,000 MW per year, the pace of expansion in China currently overshadows everything on an international level. In China, solar systems with a capacity of 123,500 MW were newly built in the first seven months of 2024 alone. A record annual increase of around 250,000 MW of solar capacity is expected in China in 2024. In Germany, the total solar capacity has so far reached around 93,200 MW, but it took us 30 years to achieve this." For Germany, the current IWR forecast for 2024 remains unchanged, according to which the newly connected wind and solar capacity in Germany could reach 15,000 to a maximum of 20,000 MW (15 - 20 GW), also due to the new offshore wind turbines. The additional annual electricity generation from the domestic wind and solar expansion alone in a single year (2024) will reach around 20 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. By comparison, in order to produce this amount of electricity with nuclear power plants, at least two large nuclear power plants would have to be connected to the grid, with construction times of 10 – 15 years for each nuclear power plant.

⚡ Ammonia cracking: New catalyst produces double the hydrogen yield and also fertiliser 💧 A team of researchers from the University Alliance Ruhr has developed a ground-breaking catalyst that could take ammonia cracking to a new level. This catalyst converts ammonia into hydrogen and nitrite, which can be easily converted into fertiliser. This technology has never been used for this purpose before. ⚙️ The researchers combined the reverse Haber-Bosch reaction with a second electrolysis of water. Instead of nitrogen, nitrite is produced, which facilitates fertiliser production and doubles the hydrogen yield. 💡 Gas diffusion electrodes that can utilise gaseous ammonia were also used for the reaction. This is also a new process, as ammonia was previously always utilised in dissolved form. 👏 We at Hy2gen welcome these efforts, as we see renewable ammonia above all as a promising substance for more sustainable fertiliser production.
