This week our colleague Lydia Korinek shared insights in this regard at an event ‘Empowering Europe’s #GreenDeal hosted by TETTRIs, Skills4EOSC, Naturhistorisches Museum Wien and CETAF - Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities. As we face complex and uncertain times, Europe needs a new compass—one that aligns economic activities with ecological systems and wellbeing, respecting Earth’s #PlanetaryBoundaries. Countries such as New Zealand, Finland, Wales, Iceland, and Scotland have a partnership to support one another to build economies that put the wellbeing of their people and planet first. To follow suit, Europe must embrace a broader set of indicators that capture our progress in protecting the environment, supporting economic resilience, and promoting social #wellbeing. By shifting our focus to a holistic understanding of the progress of our system, we can guide policies toward a #Europe where people and planet are equally valued, ensuring prosperity and resilience for generations to come 🌱 #WellbeingEconomy

New economic thinking in public policy
Info
In ancient Greek, 'Zoe' means life or the good life. At ZOE, we work towards enabling a good life for all within planetary boundaries. We envision an economy that enables humanity to live a good life in harmony with nature. One that enables participation, inclusion, and supports natural regeneration. Everyone should have access to the fruits of global prosperity, as part of a world where people contribute to each other’s dignity and wellbeing. We apply new economic thinking to public policy, to co-create the transformation of our economic system towards this vision. We adopt a systemic perspective to develop new ideas that put the needs of people and the health of the planet at the core of economic policy. Listening with empathy to key decision-makers, we co-create, explore, and seek to understand long-term solutions for the transformation of our economies. Connecting with multiple stakeholders at the interface between new economic thinking and public policy, we build policies that provide for and protect people, society, and the planet.

🌍💡 Together For a Future-fit Economic Policy! [German below] Recently, we at ZOE Institute for Future-Fit Economies, in collaboration with the Bertelsmann Stiftung, organised a workshop with participants from the German foundation sector. Our shared goal: to develop economic policy that places greater focus on social and ecological objectives and strengthens the ecosystem for #New Economic Thinking. At the heart of the workshop was the question: How can economic relationships be meaningfully linked with societal challenges? And how can we find a common language for these topics? 💬 A fascinating example: The Inflation Reduction Act #IRA in the USA was made possible through strategic collaboration among various stakeholders—a model from which we can learn. Many thanks to everyone who took part – we learned a lot and felt the desire for more strategic exchange and collaboration. We look forward to continuing our work for socio-ecological renewal of the economy together! #zukunftsfähigeÖkonomien #Wirtschaftspolitik #ZukunftGestalten Jakob Hafele Dr. Ole Wintermann Dr. Alexandra Schmied Claudia Neubauer Katrin Elsemann Renée Paula Horster Dr. Johannes Lundershausen Daniel Vockins Dr. Ellen Ehmke Karenina Schröder Anja Koenig Daniel Valenzuela

In love with problems and how to solve them, currently: Creating an economy for people and the planet, not the other way round @ ZOE
We’re just back from our Team Days… We talked Strategy, a lot. In these times of extreme uncertainty and turbulence its crucial to keep reviewing the windows of opportunity to push for more future-fit economies. As an organisation that supports others to do long-term thinking we’re trying to practice that ourselves and to keep our eyes on our vision and goals whilst constantly adapting. Bringing the whole team together really helps to do this. We also laughed, a lot. This helps too. Huge thanks to the whole ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies team for their commitment, energy, input, sense of humour, critical minds… Special thanks to Anja Boenke for making sure everything went so smoothly. And to Nora Lemmer for the lovely photos.

📰 Our Managing Director Elizabeth Dirth has written for the Times of Malta on the occasion of the hearing of the first ever European Commissioner responsible for #IntergenerationalFairness 📍 Later today, Malta's nominee Glenn Micallef will be quizzed on the role by members of the European Parliament ✍ Elizabeth writes: "While this role is a first for the EU, there are plenty of examples around the world. Micallef will be joining a growing group of leaders centring future generations in decision-making. Joining this peer group will require him to rise to the challenge of embedding intergenerational fairness - not only rely on what has gone before." #hearings #EPhearings #vonderLeyenII #FutureGenerations Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eTuUEncY

⏱ Countdown to the European Commissioner #hearings... Starting next week, the European Parliament will scrutinise the candidates for European Commissioners. A lot hangs on these individuals and their remits - what they implement and how in the next 5 years will shape Europe for decades to come. All Commissioners need to take a long-term perspective. We'll be following all the hearings to hear what the candidates have to say on actions and investments for #FutureGenerations. We are especially curious about the new remit responsible for #IntergenerationalFairness and how Glenn Micallef intends to embed long-term thinking in the next European Commission.

This week our colleague Christiny Miller has been at the OECD - OCDE Global Forum in Milan from where she shares her insights on ‘Building Trust and #ReinforcingDemocracy’. As we look beyond 2024—the largest election year in history—2025 marks a critical year for democratic governance. With many newly elected governments in place, the opportunities for institutional reforms are significant. Dialogue about how to address declining trust in public institutions and the rise of polarisation is essential to drive the reforms our democracies need. In this blog Christiny emphasises the need for governments to manage trade-offs and highlights the significance of citizen’s participation in the decision-making process: “Participation exercises should not be mere performative box-ticking; they must lead to tangible impacts on policy.". ✏️ Check out Christiny's new blog for her reflections from the OECD Forum and on how we can shift from box-ticking to impact 👉 https://lnkd.in/d4N7h-Zf . #Governance #OECD #Democracy

Unlocking regional potential can be crucial to drive Europe’s long-term #competitiveness and industrial modernisation. Fragmentation is one of the biggest challenges Europe faces in maintaining its competitive edge. 🔑 To succeed, Europe needs a unified approach—one that harnesses the strengths and potential of all its regions, preparing them to be fit for the future. Regions like South-East and North-East #Romania, Andalucía #Spain, Małopolskie #Poland, Dél-Alföld #Hungary and Sicilia #Italy to name a few... This #EURegionsWeek is the ideal time🔔 to talk about how to unlock regional potential... 🔗Our four key reasons why a unified approach is essential 👉 https://lnkd.in/dscG4Pzp #IndustrialPolicy European Committee of the Regions
