As I arrived in Rio de Janeiro for G20 discussions and admired the wonderful landscape, I reflected on the importance of well-being.    At WifOR Institute, when we talk about investing in health, it means more than just budget planning or resource allocation – it also means investing in communities. When people are healthy, they can care for others, engage in society, and contribute to growth while leading fuller lives. Ensuring better health for all, one of the Sustainable Development Goals, brings us one step closer to the other SDGs, as healthier societies can more effectively work towards these objectives. Moreover, the economic gains of strengthening health – seen, for example, in greater productivity – can also be channeled towards sustainability and prosperity. I shared these ideas at the G20 Climate Change Ministerial Side Event last week in Brazil, where we touched on the topic of inequality.  According to our study analyzing the socioeconomic burden of major diseases in eight Latin American countries, illnesses with higher mortality and morbidity (e.g., cardiovascular) particularly impact the poorest income groups. The study commissioned by FIFARMA also reveals how productivity losses caused by disease disproportionately affect informal workers. Moreover, the spillover effects of this situation put pressure on healthcare services and condition future generations. With these examples, we see the clear link between investing in health and ensuring better, more sustainable, more equitable futures where everyone can develop their full potential. When we strengthen health, we are also opening more opportunities for underprivileged groups to thrive. Underscoring the relation between individual well-being and societal prosperity is a core mission at WifOR and a catalyst for change.   This is the horizon we are aiming for. Thanks to Varnee Murugan of the Global Initiative on Health and the Economy (GIHE) (US Chamber of Commerce) for organizing this G20 Brasil 2024 side event in collaboration with FIFARMA and B20 Brasil. And thanks to my fellow speakers working towards better health for all: Carlos Gadelha, Cristiani Vieira Machado, Solange Dallana, Pablo Ibarraran, Socorro Gross, Michael Touchton, Ana Luiza Petry, Cecilia Loccisano, Mark Pearson, Cristiane Santos Blanch, Sean McCluskie. #G20  #HealthForAll  #HealthIsAnInvestment

Our Health ROI  Assessor Framework is a novel metric assessing economic returns on health investments. It illustrates the impact of health investment within and beyond the Health Economy as well as health-related productivity gains.    WifOR Institute’s Team Lead and Senior Researcher Dr. Maike Schmitt will be presenting a recent use case where the framework is applied to investment in cancer prevention in Germany at #ISPOREurope2024 on November 18th, poster session 1, number EE108.     How can the ROI Assessor Framework be applied? We build on previous evidence from the research field illustrating avoided morbidity and mortality due to the cervical cancer screening prevention program in Germany for a cohort of 100,000 women as an example:    💡 For every €1 million investment in cancer prevention in Germany, almost €2 million GDP contribution and 5 jobs are created within and beyond the healthcare sector over three years. 💡 Annual screening frequence evaluated yields significant human capital gains: 33 million hours in paid and 11million hours in unpaid work activity which corresponds to a monetary value of €328 million. 💡 Our results illustrate how this intervention generates well-being for the population and value to economy and society, promoting a new understanding of health investment as driver of economic stability and growth.     Make sure to check it out to learn more about it!    #Health  #HealthIsAnInvestment

Smart budget allocations can be a game-changer for women’s health in Latin America, especially for illnesses with a substantial socioeconomic burden. Our research shows that tackling diseases with the greatest societal consequences not only leads to healthier communities but also to enhanced economic growth. These are the points we addressed at the Roche Press Day organized by Roche LATAM and Genentech in Miami. The latest edition, focused on women and equality, underscored the vital importance of promoting health in Latin America. Breast cancer in this region, as studied by WifOR Institute, provides a good example of how prevention and treatments have a positive impact on society and the economy. Our research shows that: → Breast cancer heavily affects working-age populations, leading to losses in both paid and unpaid work → In 2022, breast cancer’s socioeconomic burden amounted to $3.06 billion across eight Latin American countries, with Brazil and Argentina being the most affected → Investing in breast cancer prevention and treatments not only improves health for women, but also strengthens the labor supply and economic productivity At WifOR, we strive to make the importance of health investments measurable throughout the world. Our studies prove that better health drives economic growth, creating fiscal space for further health innovations. This, in turn, supports enhanced health outcomes, triggering a positive feedback loop. Thanks to Rolf Hoenger and the Roche Latam team for the invitation and the meaningful discussions! And thanks also to FIFARMA Yaneth Giha for the collaboration. For every two jobs secured in the German Health Economy, an additional job is generated in the overall economy.   This occurs due to the vast economic footprint of the health sector, consisting of direct, indirect, and induced effects. WifOR Institute's Head of Impact Analysis Dr. Richard Scholz and Senior Researcher Hanna Hryhorova explain this concept in a new article published by Gesundheit und Gesellschaft (G+G), the magazine of public health insurance AOK.   ➡️ Direct effects result from value created within the Health Economy itself. For employment, this translates into 8.3 million jobs in the sector as of 2023 — or almost one in every five workers in Germany.   ➡️ Indirect effects arise from Health Economy expenditures in the supply chain. The purchase of various products creates an additional 2.7 million jobs.   ➡️ Induced effects are generated by the workers employed in the Health Economy who spend their income on consumer goods and services. As they stimulate economic activity, 1.9 million more jobs are supported.   Overall, a total of 12.9 million people are employed in connection with the Health Economy in Germany. This figure proves how health investments not only drive well-being, but also job creation and economic growth.   Read the article “Health boosts the economy” (available in German) here: https://lnkd.in/d8bvDV6r   Interested in our health research? WifOR Institute's European Skilled Labor Monitor is on its way to help tackle labor challenges across the EU. How? By harmonizing labor market data at the regional level and measuring workforce shortages.   Alongside our partner Deutsche Telekom, we are working on a large-scale interactive tool to be launched in 2025. Our labor market research and methods have already been applied internationally and now will be expanded to the entire European Union for the first time.   The Monitor, which had its most recent implementation in Upper Austria, has the function to measure workforce deficits per region, industry, and occupation. The tool thus enhances transparency and comparability, and other relevant indicators are also included.   The Skilled Labor Monitor aims to make the supply and demand of workers visible, providing forecasts up to 2040 and using sources such as Eurostat. This way, companies can not only know where personnel are scarce, but also where they could potentially find the talent they need.   We are excited to develop a tool that is part of the solution to a major European issue. Our mission is to make workforce planning accessible, accurate, and actionable for all sectors. Empowering decision-makers with insights that shape the workforce of tomorrow will pave the way for continued, sustainable growth.   Sign up here to receive the latest news on the European Skilled Labor Monitor: https://lnkd.in/drVwX9cW    Learn how the Skilled Labor Monitor works with Upper Austria's example (Land Oberösterreich Business Upper Austria - OÖ.
