🔊 Excited to share the new review on "Microbial Electrodes"! #Microorganisms interacting with electrodes are at the forefront of the dynamic field of microbial electrochemical technologies. The work dives into this interdisciplinary field that bridges #electrochemistry, #microbiology and #engineering. In their review, Annemiek Ter Heijne (Wageningen University&Research) and #UFZ scientist Falk Harnisch outline the basic methods and approaches needed to advance the field. We explore key parameters, essential electrochemical methods and the insights they provide, illustrated by two case studies. Moreover, from potential applications to the challenges ahead, this paper offers a comprehensive overview and highlights exciting directions for future research. They outperform suspended cultures in robustness, turnover, and density, with applications ranging from agriculture to wastewater treatment and biofuel production. #UFZ scientists takes you into the fascinating world of biofilms and explores how we can learn from nature to apply these insights to biotech and other fields. This comprehensive study was a collaborative effort by Mahir Bozan, Pia Lindberg and Hannah Berreth, with Katja Bühler as the corresponding author.
