2024 ARCHITECTURAL CERAMIC ASSEMBLIES WORKSHOP In order to confront one of the most critical climate threats, the urban heat island effect, team BEHNISCH ARCHITEKTEN together with Transsolar KlimaEngineering, knippershelbig and TriPyramid Structures created a façade prototype that explores the potential of terracotta to improve thermal comfort in the public realm through evaporative cooling. Drawing on the sculptural traditions of terracotta ornamentation, as well as the vernacular of the shingle roof tile, the team reconsiders the façade rainscreen to not shed water, but to store it and use it to cool the increasing temperatures of surfaces of our built environment. 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺, 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿! We are thrilled to welcome Thomas Bamber to our team in New York. Thomas arrives at Transsolar after seven years in Vancouver, BC, and six in London, UK. He brings considerable experience to the team and shares our huge appetite for innovation. In Vancouver he founded a team called ‘Air + Light’ which promoted the benefits of a passive-first approach and provided the required expertise to local projects. He lectured and taught extensively to architects, engineers, stakeholders and faculty teams on health and efficiency in buildings. Thomas has designed and completed over a dozen projects internationally which have functional passive systems. He regularly visits completed projects to gain insights into the user experience that can benefit future projects. At the Ortus Learning Centre in London, whose teaching spaces rely solely on passive ventilation and passive cooling, users reported that the building remained comfortable to use during the unprecedented 2019 heat wave in London. Thomas was closely involved in the design and post-occupancy evaluation of Clayton Community Centre in Greater Vancouver, which was Canada’s largest Passive House Building at the time of completion in 2021, and which features a hybrid active and passive ventilation system. He has contributed to several high-profile Passive House projects across North America and has shared his experience widely at North American conferences. We are excited for the growth he brings to our talented (and quirky!) team and look forward to sharing his passion for occupant-driven design and innovation and his unique storytelling of complex issues.

Fast Company reports on the City of Toronto’s recent approval of our DOWNSVIEW FRAMEWORK PLAN – the largest urban redevelopment project in North America that we are delivering together with our clients Northcrest Developments and Canada Lands Company / Société Immobilière du Canada: “The SLA vision for the site includes a commitment to a City Nature design and more green infrastructure. A quarter of the airport turned into parkland, and the planned stormwater system will rely on landscaping and more porous parkland to absorb stormwater, as opposed to the traditional system of massive pipes and drains. The proposal also calls for a 15-minute city approach, with bike lanes and pedestrian paths interspersed within the larger development.” Read more about DOWNSVIEW in FastComapny here: https://bit.ly/3yNhoSW DOWNSVIEW is designed together with our friends KPMB Architects, Henning Larsen, and Urban Strategies Inc.

#tstransition Felix Thumm: The Case for Robustness – Gap-Free Building Performance I am convinced that we must design buildings in such a way that they have a positive impact on the global climate, meaning they must be able to offset their CO2 emissions over their entire lifecycle. We can achieve this through robust buildings that deliver on their promises. Robustness relies on people interacting with buildings as active users once again, rather than leaving everything to machines. To this end, communicating clear expectations regarding the quality of stay plays a significant role in overall building performance and user satisfaction. Synergetic spatial planning, facade design, and the appropriate use of materials have the potential to create the necessary flexibility – solutions do not have to be purely technical. I take great joy in working with builders and clients who are bold enough to embrace unconventional paths. I am passionate about developing innovative ideas within a project team and am always eager to take on the role of questioning established practices, driven to find the best possible solution and generate added value. We need creative solutions, as buildings with complex technology often suffer from a so-called "performance gap" – a difference between the expected, calculated performance and its actual performance. For robust buildings, less is more. With a ‘mechanization made-to-measure’ approach, it is much easier to get it right – resulting in a closing of the gap. If we have the courage to continuously question conventional views – moving away from the mindset of "this is how we've always done it" – innovative ideas can emerge that combine comfort with efficiency. The courage for robustness in building design can turn expectations into reality. This is my path to climate neutrality in the construction sector. Felix Thumm is one of the ten new Associate Partners who will acquire shares in Transsolar and Transplan in the near future. With the ten new Associate Partners, we begin to diversify and build a solid foundation on which the generational transition can advance in a continuous and open way.

#tstransition Matthias Rammig: Climate protection and adaptation – Architecture Shaping Tomorrow I'm excited about my work in climate engineering. It allows me to pursue my passion for great architecture while consciously promoting sustainability in projects to advance climate protection in the building sector. It's up to us to minimize energy consumption now to reduce CO2 emissions and combat climate change head-on. Strategic planning and climate-responsive design are critical. We need to ensure that what we build today will be beneficial to the global climate in 2050 and beyond. It's not just about new construction; we also need to address the urgent issue of how to retrofit a significant portion of the existing building stock to protect the climate. That's why we've launched our internal Renovation Taskforce, which I chair. There are other important challenges ahead, such as empowering communities to build resilient cities for the future. We're eager to share our insights on effective climate protection and adaptation through teaching and speaking engagements. There is much to be done - our future and my profession remain exciting. Matthias Rammig is one of the ten new Associate Partners who will acquire shares in Transsolar and Transplan in the near future. With the ten new Associate Partners, we begin to diversify and build a solid foundation on which the generational transition can advance in a continuous and open way.
