Public pension costs in Spain are set to double in the next 20 years. A new study by Trade Republic, led by Prof. Javier Diaz-Gimenez from IESE Business School, projects Spain’s public pension costs will reach 225 billion euros by 2044 - 91 % higher than today, excluding inflation. Key factors include: - 16 million Spaniards will retire in the next 20 years, an increase of over 40 % compared to today. - The average time receiving pensions will rise 11 %, from 23.7 to 26.2 years. - Real-term pensions are rising due to longer careers and higher productivity, potentially increasing average pensions by 40 %. In 2023, 31 % of Social Security spending was covered by the General State Budget, highlighting future financial strain. With just 50 € monthly contributions at a 7 % annual return over 40 years, Spaniards could accumulate 128,000 € in today's purchasing power. However, high management fees (2 %) could reduce that wealth by 55 %, so choosing low-fee investments is crucial.
