The percentage of the foreign-born population differs widely within the OECD - OCDE and two Asian nations are finding themselves well towards the bottom of the ranking. Japan and South Korea – two countries long known for their at-times negative stance on migration – only boast foreign-born populations of 2.2 and 3.5 percent, recently. Only Mexico scored lower among the 38 countries ranked at 1 percent, while Poland's figure was 2.5 percent. This scenario is flipped on its head in European nations Luxembourg and Switzerland, which had the highest score in the ranking. A countries surprisingly below the OECD average of 14.0 percent was France at 12.7 percent, while the United States hit the average rate.

New York City has been named the world's most expensive place to build, with costs reaching $5,723 per square meter, according to the Turner & Townsend International Construction Market Survey. This marks a 5% increase from last year, keeping NYC at the top for the second consecutive year. San Francisco follows closely at $5,489 per m². Six of the top eight most expensive cities to build in are in the U.S., driven by high labor, machinery, and equipment costs. Hong Kong and London rank ninth and tenth, while Tokyo has dropped off the list due to the yen's devaluation and moderate economic growth.

While only time will tell whether or not NVIDIA’s current valuation is justified, one thing is certain: Its market capitalization of roughly $3 trillion is based on expectations for future growth more than it is on current results. While Nvidia saw its revenue and profit grow at an extraordinary pace over the past year, it is still far from the levels that its fellow $3+ trillion companies Apple and Microsoft have been consistently reporting for the past few years. As our chart shows, Nvidia revenue for the past four completed fiscal quarters adds up to $96.3 billion. That's a quarter of Apple’s revenue for the comparable time frame and roughly 40 percent of Microsoft’s. In terms of profit, Nvidia is already closer to its fellow market cap heavyweights with its $53 billion in net income in the trailing twelve months equivalent to 52 percent of Apple’s profit and 60 percent of Microsoft’s net income. Where Nvidia sets itself apart is a) its gross margin of 75 percent in the most recent quarter (46 percent for Apple and 70 percent for Microsoft) and, most importantly, its current growth. Compared to the same 12-month period a year earlier, Nvidia’s revenue grew 195 percent in the four most recent quarters, compared to 0.4 percent growth for Apple and Microsoft’s 16 percent growth. For the current quarter, Nvidia expects another 80 percent jump in revenue, but the question is how long the company will be able to sustain this pace of growth or the extraordinary demand for its chips that power the transition to an AI-based future of computing.

Spotify has become a global leader in music streaming, attracting hundreds of millions of users with its vast music catalog, personalized recommendations, and ease of access. China is a world leader for many things and that includes high-speed trains. While it's regular long-distance trains reach maximum operating speeds of 350 km/h (217 mph), the world's fastest train currently is the Shanghai Maglev, which can operate at 460 km/h (286 mph) on short routes using German-made magnetic levitation technology that was rejected in its origin country for its high price tag. However, since 2021, it has operated at speeds of 300 km/h (186 mph). Germany meanwhile has matched China's regular high-speed rail prowess with its newest Intercity-Express 3. Both the ICE 3 and China Rail's Harmony and Fuxing trains beat the French TGV and Japanese Shinkansen, operating at 320 km/h (199 mph). This is the same speed that a lesser-known high-speed train, Morocco's Al Boraq, is reaching in regular operation between Tangier and Kentira on the country's Northern coast. According to data complied by Railway Technology, Spain's fastest train, Renfe's AVE 103, follows close behind with a 310 km/h (193 mph) maximum operating speed. For comparison, high-speed rail under construction and to be introduced in India and the United States won't reach up to these speeds. While the U.S.' new Acela trains entering service this year are expected to reach 257 km/h (160 mph), India is looking to construct trains that reach an operating speed of 220 km/h (137 mph).

On December 2, 2008, Google released the first version of the Google Chrome browser for Windows XP - four years later, it was already the most widely used web browser in the world. Today, with a market share of around 65.4 percent, Chrome is far ahead of all other browsers. Alongside the search engine and the YouTube video portal, Chrome is probably one of the US company's biggest success stories. Previously, the majority of internet users surfed the web with Internet Explorer. But that was quite a while ago. According to StatCounter, the heyday of Internet Explorer was history with the rise of Chrome. Germany was generally regarded as a Firefox stronghold. Accordingly, it took until the fall of 2017 for Chrome to overtake Firefox, the market leader at the time. Today, however, Chrome is clearly the most widely used browser in Germany too.

With the Summer Olympics having drawn to a close on 11 August, the next major multi-discipline international sporting event is due to get started this week - the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Meaning the 'parallel olympics', the Games are a meeting of the world's top athletes that have a range of disabilities and have taken place since 1960. As data from the International Paralympic Committee shows, similar to the Olympic Games, the United States has been the dominant force in the Paralympics with a total of 2,283 medals, which is the highest number of overall victories. Great Britain is currently in second place with 1,913 medals. When combining Germany’s gold, silver and bronze medals for the former East Germany and West Germany with today’s Germany (i.e. post-reunification), then the country rounds off the podium with 1,550 awards. The opening ceremony will take place on 28 August while the first competitions will start the following day, including medals being awarded in the swimming, taekwondo and cycling.
