Anthony Psulkowski from the Institute for Advanced Materials in the United States has been awarded a RETSCH goods voucher for his outstanding project on: Synthesis, Characterization, and Printability Evaluation of Lunar Regolith for Selective Laser Sintering in Off-World In Situ Resource Utilization Fabrication 🔎 Project Highlights: Anthony's research addresses the challenges of deep-space exploration by exploring the use of lunar regolith for in situ manufacturing on the Moon. This innovative approach could significantly reduce the need for transporting materials from Earth, lowering costs and advancing sustainable space exploration. ❓ Key Questions answered by the project: ✔ Can lunar regolith substitute Ordinary Portland Concrete (OPC) for lunar habitats? ✔How do its unique characteristics impact synthesis and printability using SLS technology? ✔What are the optimal printing parameters for achieving the desired properties in SLS-based construction? ✔How does utilizing lunar regolith reduce costs and logistical challenges in space missions? 💡 The benefits of Anthony’s scientific project are: Advancing Space Exploration and Habitation: Facilitates sustainable construction on the Moon. Cost-Efficient Space Exploration: Reduces the need for Earth-sourced materials. Gold-coated grinding jars enable the team from the Inorganic Chemistry Department at Ruhr University Bochum to sustainably convert alcohols into aldehydes—without any solvents or environmentally harmful chemicals. We are proud that our mixer mills make this groundbreaking project possible. With the innovative approach of applying a thin layer of gold to the grinding jars, the team led by Prof. Dr. Lars Borchardt and Maximilian Wohlgemuth achieved an environmentally friendly, mechanically driven catalytic reaction. These reusable vessels open up new perspectives for catalysis and demonstrate how traditional materials can solve modern environmental problems.     🌌🚀 We're thrilled to announce that the innovative project by Yuichiro Kobayashi & Team from Osaka University, Japan, titled "Creation of Sulphur Polymer Composite Materials" has won a prize in the RETSCH Scientific Challenge! 🚀🌌   This pioneering project aims to harness the potential of sulphur polymers, utilizing the 7 million tonnes of sulphur disposed of annually to contribute to a sustainable society. By exploring both chain and sequential polymerization methods, the team has developed sulphur polymers with high capacitance and refractive index, ideal for applications in battery cathodes and lenses. Their groundbreaking work includes synthesizing a thioepoxy cured material, the first of its kind, which exhibits unique self-healing properties and enhanced physical characteristics.   Questions answered by the project: Can sulphur polymers be combined with other materials? Can conductive sulphur polymers be produced by incorporating conductive substances? How do mechanical properties change when sulphur polymers are combined with inorganic materials?
