“We want to be a company that sees the next century.” – David Vranicar, Operations Lead, Sustainability at Shopify In this video, David explains how Shopify came to prepurchase Phlair carbon removal certificates. And he talks about the urgency of acting on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) today. Phlair. Enabling a carbon-negative future.

Info
Phlair is revolutionizing carbon removal with its hydrolyzer-based Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, enabling scalable and low-cost CO2 capture from ambient air. Phlair’s system employs a pH-swing mechanism for efficient CO₂ capture and release, allowing for permanent storage or use in CO2-negative chemicals. Founded in 2022 and based in Munich, Germany, Phlair serves prominent customers in carbon removal, including Shopify, Stripe, Klarna, and Deep Sky. You can reduce your carbon footprint by buying high-quality, permanent carbon removals from us as a company or individual.

Our second Circle of CDR is in the books. Here’s what you’ve missed: • a panel and Q&A with Carlos Haertel about the state of Direct Air Capture as a negative emissions technology • the chance to get an in-depth look at our Hydrolyzer stacks • a sneak preview of Electra 00, our 10 tCO2/year pilot plant, the first of its kind in Bavaria • networking with like-minded carbon dioxide removal (CDR) thought leaders from various industries • a trip to Oktoberfest (which is making great progress on becoming climate neutral) to end the day and to celebrate our recent $14.5M seed round Phlair. Enabling a carbon-negative future.

In the context of our €14.5M seed round, our co-founder and CEO Malte spoke with Tim De Chant from TechCrunch. The interview is a great read to get an understanding of: (1) the challenges first generation DAC companies are facing, (2) how our technology works, and (3) where Phlair is headed. Phlair has raised €14.5M in seed funding. The round was led by Extantia, with participation from Planet A Ventures and Verve Ventures, and a €2.5M grant from the EIC accelerator program (European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA)). We will use the funding to deploy our two FOAK DAC plants Electra 01 and Electra 02 next year. The round also lays the foundation for our > 20,000 tCO2/year commercial plant Project Dawn, scheduled to come online in 2026. We’re excited to welcome Albert Wenger, Birgit Heraeus-Roggendorf, Jan Rinnert, and Sebastian Herler to our existing family of investors (Atlantic Labs, Counteract, and UnternehmerTUM Funding for Innovators) and business angels (Markus Steilemann, Christian Vollmann, Andreas Gocke, Leopold Spenner, Fabian Kiechle, Maximilian Waldmann, Theresa Hauck, Ben Brandt). Special thanks for the support and trust Torben Schreiter, Carlota Ochoa Neven Du Mont, Yair Reem, Tobias Seikel, Nick de la Forge, Thomas Meier, Andrew Shebbeare, Ruben Schultz and Inga vom Holtz). We have been selected by AirMiners and will deliver to their Kiloton Fund. AirMiners provides catalytic infrastructure for innovators working to scale carbon dioxide removals to gigaton scale. In addition to the agreement, we will also have the opportunity to secure an additional purchase from Shopify. As a member of Frontier Climate, Shopify has already purchased removals from our Rotterdam plant Electra 01. Thanks for the continued trust Adina, TITO and Jason! Phlair. Are you in Berlin next week? Send me a message! I am looking forward to being a panelist at the CEEZER Carbon Connect day, on Sept 17th, to discuss the carbon removal market and the role Direct Air Capture plays. Our panel "From the field: Landscaping the present and future of CDR development" will feature industry leaders Aarthi Paul (Isometric, also our MRV & Registry partner!), Mart de Bruijn (Carboneers) and Roos de Bruijn (InPlanet) - bringing you the key insights from core carbon removal technologies and beyond. Excited for an engaging discussion, led by Lucas van Doorn!

Scaling a nascent industry like Direct Air Capture feels like solving a big puzzle. You need to make all the pieces (customers, investors, suppliers, etc.) fit together to achieve the ambitious growth required for net zero. As we‘re looking to deploy Project Dawn with a capacity of 20,000 tCO2/year in 2026, we really see the need for true pioneers as partners. That’s why we were excited to welcome the Breakthrough Energy team around Ashley and Francisco to our facilities in Ismaning this week. The Breakthrough Catalyst program (link in comments) is one of the few initiatives taking the lead on FOAK financing. They support the most promising technologies in this crucial step of scaling up from pilot stage to commercial readiness. We gave them a tour around our lab and showcased our Hydrolyzer stacks and absorber modules – the heart and lung of our DAC system. And we talked about the challenges and opportunities of this next step in scaling our technology to an impactful scale. Thanks to UnternehmerTUM Philipp Gerbert, Lars Eiermann, for making this valuable exchange possible. Phlair. Enabling a carbon-negative future.

It’s official! Electra 02 will be deployed in Innisfail, Canada. We recently presented our first of a kind plant Electra 01, which will start operations in Rotterdam in 2025. Today, Deep Sky has announced the location of Electra 01’s twin plant Electra 02. Electra 02 will be the first deployment of our Hydrolzyer-based DAC technology outside of Europe. Operated by Deep Sky at their pilot facility in Alberta, the plant will have the capacity to remove 260 tons of carbon dioxide per year. Deep Sky will compress and liquify the removed CO2 for transport and storage. Learn more about the Innisfail site using the link in the comments. Phlair. Enabling a carbon-negative future. We’re excited to join CEEZER, the digital platform connecting carbon credit buyers and vetted global climate project developers. What this means: Our carbon removal credits from our upcoming plants Electra 01 (260 tCO2/year starting in 2025) and Dawn (20,000 tCO2/year starting in 2026) will be available for purchase directly on the CEEZER platform. Marketplaces play an integral role in helping companies reach net zero by connecting buyers with suppliers. The great thing about CEEZER: 1️⃣ They have a detailed vetting process in place, which de-risks CDR purchases for buyers. 2️⃣ Buyers can purchase removal credits from individual projects or invest in a portfolio diversified across various suppliers and technological approaches. 3️⃣ You can manage your whole CDR portfolio directly on the CEEZER platform.
