Detecting wildfires from space @ OroraTech

🚀 One of the biggest challenges our OroraTech team is tackling is cutting down the time for space data processing. Anyone working with space technologies knows processing can often take hours before actionable information is available. But what if we could change that? 🛰️ One of the solutions is on-orbit data processing, which will be possible with our future constellation. However, while we’re preparing to launch our cameras, wildfires are not waiting. The need for fast data is critical, especially during aggressive fires threatening lives and infrastructure. 🔥 That’s why we’ve already integrated satellites into our app that offer faster processing times and have developed algorithms that significantly reduce the data delay to 30-40 minutes. Curious about how this works in real life? Check out the animation below showcasing the Wapiti Fire, Idaho. You’ll find details on some individual hotspots, satellite overpass times (Acquisition), and when alerts are sent to users (Detection).

It was such an honor to present at the European Space Agency - ESA CubeSat Summer School last week at the ESA Academy’s Training and Learning Facility at the EuroSpace Center in Belgium. This was such a great way to engage with a diverse group of enthusiastic students on how OroraTech builds our satellites and explore future trends when it comes to SmallSats. I am proud to have contributed to a school that brings such creative minds together from around Europe. Helping these students to build and construct their first CubeSats, combined with all the management skills and legal aspects needed to launch them, creates an amazing program for building amazing programs in the future. And maybe a few of these brilliant people can work from OroraTech someday. A huge thank you to the ESA Academy, and the coordinators Eleftherios Karagiannis , Fanny Albert and all the team for having me! And thank you to our recruiter, Connor Oxley, for joining me at the event. #EuropeanSpaceAgency #CareerDevelopment #CubeSats #EarthObservation

Only one more month until OroraTech’s International Wildfire Conference on October 1st & 2nd. This time we are hosted in the beautiful city of Augsburg in Bavaria with its baroque downtown area. This year, we will address the progress made in mastering the challenges of wildfires worldwide: better preparation by more understanding of risks, and faster response through superior situational awareness and early detection.   But most importantly, it’s the exchange and collaboration between experts that creates innovation. So having distinguished speakers and wildfire experts from around the globe in one room is really powerful. This is precisely the goal of our conference—to gather the wildfire community and find better ways of staying in control together. This year, I am specifically looking forward to hearing from Zisoula Ntasiou from the Hellenic Fire Service on their efforts during the 2024 Greek fire season. As we integrate our Wildfire Solution into their command platforms, we want to find the best answer to combat fire in a region of the world where dry summers, high winds, and a fragmented topography make fires incredibly difficult to fight. Our commercial team and I are all looking forward to seeing you all again!

August 16th and 17th were scary days in the city of İzmir, Turkey, a port city on the Mediterranean and the third most populated within the country. The incredibly hot and dry conditions across the entire country were the perfect conditions for fire ignition and spread. Sparked by the campfire of picnickers around Mount Yamalar just outside the city. The fire moved quickly. As you can see from our Wildfire Solution timelapse, it sprinted south within a two-hour timeframe and started threatening the outskirts of the city. A total of 900 people were evacuated from the area, and the local fire department quickly sprang into action, mobilizing area units and doing everything possible to save resident builds.   According to our affected area estimates, the blaze ultimately covered 55.90 km² of land north of the downtown, ultimately burning 17 houses, according to local reports. Tools like our Wildfire Solution allow the tracking and management of fires just like these, with the ability to predict the direction and speed of a fire up to 24 hours in advance. A huge kudos must go out to the local İzmir Fire Department and the General Directorate of Forestry for their heroic suppression efforts and bringing this blaze under control. #WildfireManagement #EarthObservation #Izmir #Türkiye

Our Head of Data Science & AI Julia Gottfriedsen recently gave a talk on how we build our automated Fire Spread modeling at the first Science Understanding through Data Science conference at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena! Put on by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, this event is a great collaboration point between physical science and data science, getting together to discuss advancements and methodologies. Our Fire Spread is the perfect balance between these two subjects. We combine and refine real weather, physical ground, and fire data to best predict the strength, direction, and speed of a fire up to 24 hours from now. This assists firefighters to concentrate their efforts and place their equipment strategically. We have fine-tuned numerous data points across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia to create a model that predicts these incredibly accurately, and our tool has been deployed in major fires around the world. We were so excited to present this amazing technology behind our Fire Spread product to top minds in the industry! A huge thank you for the invite to speak, and a huge thank you to the entire Fire Spread team and their industry partners for their incredible efforts. Welcome to the Suez Canal 🇪🇬 It’s hard to fully understand the impact that this small waterway has had on global development. This 205-meter (672-foot) wide canal is used by 15% of the world’s maritime trade, cutting about 7,000 kilometers (about 4,500 miles) off the journey from Asia to Europe - as long as there isn’t a ship wedged in the middle of it. You can very clearly see how Port Said, with its hundreds of concrete streets and buildings, is much hotter than the surrounding desert, as heat is absorbed into these human structures. Because the depth of the canal is shallower than the Great Bitter Lake, you can clearly trace the lines of the canal itself, sometimes splitting into two separate lanes to accommodate two-way traffic. One of the most interesting things to see is the difference in temperature between the Great Bitter Lake in the south and the warm Mediterranean in the north. While the two share a waterway with the canal, their temperatures differ by about 5-10 degrees Celsius between them (10-20 degrees Fahrenheit) at any given moment. The Mediterranean coast near Egypt tends to be much shallower and easier to heat than the Red Sea feeding the Great Bitter Lake, resulting in much cooler water. Insights like these can easily be derived from thermal images, like this one from FOREST-2. With these insights, scientists can measure and catalog temperature anywhere on Earth, leading to a great understanding of the world around us. #SuezCanal #EarthObservation #ThermalImagery #ClimateChange

Something I'm really looking forward to OroraTech's International Wildfire Conference beginning of October! 🔥 This event is super meaningful to me because it's one of the few times we get to gather wildfire experts from all over the world in one place. Plus, it's a chance to hang out in person with our amazing OroraTech team, who are usually scattered across different continents 🌍. At #IWC2024, we'll be sharing insights on everything from improving wildfire detection and monitoring to improved fire risk assessment, prepping for intense fire seasons, & damage analysis. And, of course, we'll dive into the latest innovations in wildfire management, especially around AI and satellite technology. To top it off, one of the conference days includes a joint visit to Oktoberfest! 🍻 It's going to be a great mix of meaningful discussions and Bavarian fun. I can't wait to be part of the discussions, which are always packed with value and purpose. With wildfires causing up to 20% of the global CO2 emissions the work being done here is crucial for anyone passionate about a more sustainable future for our planet 🌱. #wildfiremonitoring #wildfiredetection #satellitetechnology #fireriskassessment #innovation #AI
