We are honored to share that we have been awarded the 3Rs Prize by National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) pioneering non-animal method with regulatory approval for evaluating hormone potency. This annual prize is awarded for papers showing outstanding, original work with significant potential to impact the 3Rs—replacement, reduction, or refinement—of animal use in research. This recognition is a testament to our commitment to advancing ethical and sustainable research. A special congratulations to Francesco Nevelli, Head of Cell Based Assay Lab - Senior Scientist and his team, for exceptional work in developing the in vitro assay to test follicle-stimulating hormone potency. This shall reduce the use of tens of thousands of animals in testing annually, marking an important step forward in humane research. Big news! Today, we announced the opening of our newly expanded Life Science distribution center in Schnelldorf, Germany. The investment of € 180 million added 25,000 square meters to the site, almost doubling its size. It now includes a new manual down filling operation and additional space for the distribution of a wide range of products to laboratories and research facilities all around the world. Merck has signed a definitive agreement to acquire life science company Mirus Bio for US$ 600 million (around € 550 million). Mirus Bio is a specialist in the development and commercialization of transfection reagents. These reagents play a key role in the production of viral vectors for cell and gene therapies. The acquisition will advance our integrated offering for viral vector manufacturing and complements the existing portfolio for development and production of novel modalities – a key growth area for Merck Life Science. In recent conversations with my family, colleagues, and industry peers in Germany but also across Europe, there has been one recurring topic – we are all witnessing an alarming rise of populism, protectionism, and a decline in solidarity. A recent Global Risk Report 2024 launched by the World Economic Forum highlighted 'societal polarization' as one of the top global risks facing our world. This underscores the urgency to unite, consider the bigger picture, work in support of international collaboration, while respecting and role-modeling our democratic principles. And these shouldn’t be negotiable. My aspiration for an inclusive world starts with upholding our commitment to core European values. Democracy, freedom, equality, and human rights are and must remain the core of our identity. These values are not only the foundation of our society but also provide the fertile ground for innovation, growth, and competitiveness. The key here is to further nurture the power of diversity to build a stronger and more united Europe.
