🌍 Two Decades, 1,500 Policies, and 63 Success Stories: What’s Working in Climate Policy? Climate change isn’t just a talking point—it’s a pressing global challenge that demands urgent and effective action. A newly published study has done something remarkable: it evaluated 1,500 climate policy measures across 41 countries over 24 years. The results? Eye-opening. Only 63 of these policies, which were a mix of carbon pricing, tax incentives, and other strategies, delivered meaningful emission reductions. So, what’s the secret sauce? It turns out that these policies, when mixed with other strategies, are the key to making real progress. Let’s face it—more policies don’t always mean better outcomes. But when we get the mix right, like the UK’s blend of carbon pricing and renewable subsidies or Norway’s approach to taxing emissions, we see real change. An interactive tool, the “Climate Policy Explorer,” now makes it easier to dive into this data and uncover what’s working—and what’s not. 🏙️ Coastal cities, the frontline in the battle against climate change, are currently grappling with the urgent issue of rising seas and severe storms. But are they sufficiently prepared? A recent study uncovers some critical realities that demand immediate attention. Coastal cities worldwide are making strides in climate adaptation—but it's not all good news. While wealthy cities are fortifying their defences, many low-income regions are left relying on individual efforts, often with minimal support. The focus is primarily on today's challenges, with little attention to what tomorrow might bring. The study underscores troubling inequality. Coastal adaptation is not just about sandbags and seawalls; it's about ensuring equitable access to necessary resources. Without a proactive, future-focused strategy, these cities risk being overwhelmed as climate impacts escalate. What can we do? Investing in transformative adaptation strategies, improving data collection in underrepresented areas, and fostering global cooperation, which is crucial in this global issue, can significantly and positively impact.
