Recently our director Debora Benjamen had the incredible opportunity to participate in the ICYMARE International Conference for YOUNG Marine Researchers #ICYMARE2024 in Bremen, Germany. This dynamic event not only facilitated invaluable knowledge sharing, but also allowed to showcasing the impactful work being undertaken at Blue Carbon Tanzania (BCT). Hosted by the University of Bremen from September 16th-20th, 2024, ICYMARE 2024 proved to be an inspiring and transformative experience for all in attendance.

Last Friday, the ICYMARE International Conference for YOUNG Marine Researchers 2024 Conference hosted at the University of Bremen featured an inspiring keynote by Christoph Sodemann, managing director of constructify.media e.V.. He presented the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung funded polar research project YESSS, providing an example of how science could engage constructive journalism in sharing its findings with the world. I attended my first ever conference, ICYMARE International Conference for YOUNG Marine Researchers in Bremen 16.-20.9.2024, in the poster session and also held my first international art exhibition at the same time. What a week! I really have to say that the conference experience exceeded all my expectations. My poster was in session 1.3 Fish in a Changing World: Exploring How Climate Change Shapes Fish and Their Homes, and was about Mysid shrimps as a source of nutrition for Baltic herring in the northern Baltic Sea. The poster is representing a part of the ongoing Baltic herring research project in the Archipelago Research Institute of the Turun yliopisto - University of Turku. I am so grateful for the opportunity to make new connections, improve my scientific poster presentation skills, and learn about other research projects. We had some great discussions during the week. I'm also thankful that I got to take part in this year's art corner. I brought six printed versions of my paintings with the Baltic Sea theme and created a small exhibition called "Would you answer the call of the sea?". This conference really felt like it was meant to be my first time going abroad scientifically. I want to thank all of you who made our week together possible: conference hosts and art corner people, my new marine science colleagues, and of course my supervisor in the Archipelago Research Institute who helped me to apply for ICYMARE💙🌊 I'm really excited to see what the next wave brings.

Yesterday, I attended the ICYMARE International Conference for YOUNG Marine Researchers in Bremen 🌊 Until 2022, I was part of the organizing team, which was my first exposure to the scientific conference format. I've connected with ECOPS who have become friends and colleagues in the field. It's truly inspiring to see the how the conference has grown, continuing to provide early-career researchers with excellent opportunities to network and present their research. I also had the pleasure of meeting Nuri Max Steinmann and attending his insightful talk on social and environmental inclusion. We've already been in touch through the UN Ocean Decade initiatives, and it was great to connect in person. His message, that Inclusion drives better conservation, resonates strongly with our work at Pro Ocean. The marine community in Germany may be small, but it's an inspiring, creative, and innovative bubble that I'm grateful to be part of! #oceanoptimism🌊

The project winner of this year’s PyroScience GmbH call is Maria Rakka from Dalhousie University (CAN) with the topic “Thermal tolerance of deep-sea corals in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean” ! This project aims to study the thermal tolerance of selected deep-sea coral species in the Northwest Atlantic, to better understand their potential physiological responses to climate change. We will collect and maintain live corals during a research expedition and will perform aquaria experiments with a FireSting-O2 meter and robust oxygen probes to study their physiological response to temperature changes. Our results will contribute to a better understanding of deep-sea coral physiology and climate change impacts on deep-sea ecosystems. Great pleasure to give the keynote speech at the ICYMARE International Conference for YOUNG Marine Researchers conference today. Under the title "Inclusive Action for the Ocean We Want", a topic that is a central point of action for the Kontaktstelle Ozeandekade and Early Career Ocean Professionals Germany, I discussed geopolitical inclusivity & the role of Social Safeguards that we implement in Blue Action Fund projects. Ganz hoch im Kurs steht #OceanDecadeOutcome Nr. 1 - ein sauberer Ozean! 🗣 Nuri Max Steinmann und Kim Nierobisch haben im Rahmen des #FYORDScienceCafe der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel über die Bedeutung von beruflichen Netzwerken aus ihrer Perspektive als #EarlyCareerOceanProfessionals berichtet. 💡 Diese Woche begleiten wir unseren Netzwerkpartner TMT | Transferzentrum f. Maritime Technologien Schleswig-Holstein bei der Ocean Re-CREATION Challenge. Als offizielle Aktivität im Rahmen der #UNOzeandekade entwickeln die Teilnehmer:innen Lösungen, die zu den #OceanDecadeChallenges 4, 5, 7 und 9 beitragen. Wir sind gespannt auf die Ergebnisse!
