Congratulations to Dr. Geraint Whittaker, one of this year's winners of the Falling Walls Award by Falling Walls Foundation. The call received more than 1,100 international nominations, showcasing innovative scientific advancements and impactful initiatives across various fields. Geraint has made it onto the shortlist in the “Science Engagement” category with the Ocean Science Jam. The Ocean Science Jam is a project that brings together musicians, artists, dancers, performers, the public and ocean researchers to creatively respond to visual and acoustic cues in real time, based on a theme linked to the work of marine scientists. Geraint will aslo be a speaker at this year's Falling Walls Science Summit, starting tomorrow in Berlin. Im Kapitel "Küste und Küstengewässer" des Faktencheck Artenvielfalt werden die Herausforderungen dieses besonderen Lebensraumes zwischen Land und Meer herausgearbeitet. Auch an den deutschen Küsten haben menschliche Eingriffe und Einwirkungen die natürlichen Strukturen verändert und die Artenvielfalt stark beeinträchtigt. Aber - die Treiber dieser Veränderungen liegen nicht nur in Nutzungen im direkten Bereich der Meeres- und Küstenlandschaften, sondern auch an Land, wo zum Beispiel Nähr- und Schadstoffe aus Landwirtschaft und Industrie in Fließgewässer eintragen werden und von dort in die Küstengewässer und Meere gelangen. Darüber hinaus spielt der Klimawandel eine erhebliche Rolle und wird nach Einschätzung der Expertinnen und Experten zukünftig der primäre Treiber des Biodiversitätswandels im Küstenbereich sein. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des Kapitels halten fest, dass die Politik bei der Regulierung nachbessern muss. Dafür ist überregionale und internationale Abstimmung und Zusammenarbeit nötig. Die meisten Treiber des Biodiversitätswandels an den deutschen Küsten und Küstengewässern sind nicht lokal, sondern regional oder global zu verorten. Eine Handlungsoption wäre beispielsweise, die Schutzfunktion von ausgewiesenen Schutzgebieten durch Einschränkung der Nutzungsformen zu verbessern und diese in ein Netzwerk räumlich kommunizierender Schutzgebiete einzubinden. Auch eine verstärkte Zusammenarbeit über Sektoren und Ländergrenzen hinweg ist dringend geboten.
