Days of impact and joy 🌟 A few days ago, we hosted two remarkable events: our Volunteering Day and our Kids Day. First, our dedicated colleagues at the Heidelberg headquarters participated in the #VolunteeringDay, organised by our X.PLORE trainees. Under the inspiring motto “Wir schaffen was” (“We create something”), we joined forces to contribute to various projects across the Rhine-Neckar region. The day was a resounding success, strengthening not only our community but also our team spirit. Following this, we celebrated our #KidsDay at the headquarters. Colleagues had the opportunity to bring their families, show their workplace, and enjoy a day filled with fun activities. From a magician show to a performance by our house band, the Concrete Rockers, the event was packed with excitement. The highlight for many was the hands-on experience at the lab stations, where children could explore our materials and even wear their own lab coats and goggles. Seeing the joy and curiosity in their eyes was priceless. These events underscore our belief that companies play a crucial role in society and that supporting our employees and their families is paramount. We look forward to continuing to drive positive change together in the future. Have you participated in similar events at your workplace? We’d love to hear your experiences!

One million working hours at Brevik CCS 🎉 Our #CCS project in #Brevik, Norway recently reached a new milestone by surpassing 1,000,000 hours of work with a great safety record, marking a significant achievement as the project progresses on schedule. We wish our Norwegian colleagues all the best on their final mile to mechanical completion of the facility by the end of the year.

The CCS debate in Germany is finally turning ↩️   How can we capture and store hard-to-abate CO₂ in our home market of Germany in the future? Robert Habeck, Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs & Climate Action, gave a speech in the German parliament on the technology and described the turnaround in the handling of #CCS. He made it clear that CCS is a technology we need to use now, as it is tested, mature, safe, and will soon be ready for use. This is an industrial policy #milestone and the basis for our innovative projects to become a reality in Germany. We look forward to the necessary legislation now being put in place.

Pioneering CCS in the Mediterranean 🇮🇹 Heidelberg Materials has initiated a feasibility study for a #decarbonisation project at our Rezzato-Mazzano cement plant in the province of Brescia, Italy. With a target capture rate of more than 95% of our plant’s emissions, the project aims to use depleted gas fields in the Adriatic Sea and to produce carbon captured net-zero #evoZero cement, making it the first of its kind in Italy. The recent launch of the Ravenna #CCS project, carried out by a joint venture between the Italian integrated energy company Eni and the energy infrastructure operator Snam opens up possible scenarios for Heidelberg Materials. As a result, we could participate in the future allocation processes of CO₂ transport and storage capacities in the depleted gas fields off the coast of Ravenna with an estimated total storage capacity of more than 500 million tonnes. You can’t fix a cement kiln by just doing a quick online search… 📱 But with our Root Cause #FailureAnalysis tool (RCFA), you can get pretty close to that! It is a digital problem-solving solution that marks a significant advance in the way we maintain our cement plant equipment. RCFA enables systematic analyses in cases of downtimes and breakdowns. And it creates an extensive network of information by facilitating seamless knowledge sharing among experts across over 100 of our operational sites worldwide, saving time and helping to prevent accidents 🔃 Furthermore, generative #AI enables even more accurate and accessible search capabilities, allowing solutions to be found through natural language queries and boosting efficiency 🤖 Let’s continue to drive technological evolution in our industrial #maintenance!

✨ Northern Lights shine bright as of today: CO₂ receiving facility in Norway completed! 🚩 One more important milestone towards the start of carbon capture and storage (CCS) at our Brevik plant: Today’s Northern Lights Summit marks the completion of the CO₂ receiving facilities at the Norwegian west coast. ⛴ As one of our key partners in the Longship project, Northern Lights JV will handle the CO₂ captured from our Brevik CCS facility. They have developed an open and flexible infrastructure to transport CO₂ from capture sites for safe and permanent storage in reservoirs 2,600 metres below the seabed. 🤝 "One of the success factors of the Longship project is the benefits we have gained from implementing and sharing our learnings across industries and borders. We are seeing a growing interest from customers, industry peers, governments and media all over the world. Realising the Brevik CCS project has also been of significant value to our own project teams in other countries. And it is a major factor in the expansion of our CCUS portfolio as we are pioneering the decarbonisation of the building materials industry", said Giv K. Brantenberg, General Manager at Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe, who attended the Summit. 🚀 Heidelberg Materials is looking forward to being the first industrial customer to deliver CO₂ by ships to Northern Lights soon.

Showcasing Leadership at the UN General Assembly’s high-level event on “Innovation for a sustainable future” 🇺🇳🌎 At this week’s New York Climate Week our CEO, Dr. Dominik von Achten, discussed the role of carbon pricing at the UNGA’s panel: “Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Working together on industrial growth and decarbonisation” with world leaders including: H.E. Catherine Stewart, Canada's Ambassador for Climate Change H.E. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada H.E. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission Ms. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization Mr. Selwin Charles Hart, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition At Heidelberg Materials, we are putting decarbonisation at the forefront of our operations. Already today, one-third of our revenues come from sustainable products. Carbon pricing is an important driver in this transformation and clean technologies are becoming a significant competitive factor. From Edmonton in Canada to Mitchell in the US to Brevik in Norway: Spanning the globe, our first large-scale CCUS projects underscore our strong commitment on our path to net zero. In order to transition from an innovation stage to full-scale deployment, we need a comprehensive set of measures to support first-mover projects. The effective use of carbon pricing revenues is essential for this transformation. Additionally, governments can further support this shift through ‘green public procurement’ schemes, which can significantly drive demand for low-carbon and circular products. A special thanks goes out to all speakers for a fruitful discussion and for fostering the collaborative spirit needed as we work towards a sustainable future. #ClimateWeekNYC

Setting a new industry standard in Egypt This week marked the official inauguration of Heidelberg Materials Egypt’s groundbreaking Waste Heat Recovery System at our Helwan plant. It is the first of its kind in the cement industry in Egypt and has the potential to generate up to 20 megawatt of power for captive consumption. Heidelberg Materials Egypt is applying this innovation to lower conventional energy sources and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 kilotonnes per year. The project is another example of the company’s global commitments that aim at building a more sustainable future. It also supports Egypt’s Vision 2030, a national agenda to achieve the principles and goals of sustainable development in all fields. 🖐 to our colleagues in Egypt! #WasteHeatRecovery #Sustainability #Innovation
