#𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 | 𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗠 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗵𝗼𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗢𝗙 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝐬 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 The European Space Agency - ESA plans to launch its #CO2M #spacemission in 2026. It aims to find out exactly how much CO₂ greenhouse gas in Earth's atmosphere is caused by human activity. The CO2M mission will therefore not only contribute to a better understanding of the global #carboncycle, but ultimately also help to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Researchers from Fraunhofer IOF have developed and manufactured what is probably the most important optical assembly for the spectrometers on board the satellites: the disperser. It allows high-precision measurements of #greenhousegases and their concentration. "As a center of optics, we are making an important contribution to limiting #climatechange, because CO2M will provide decision-makers with reliable figures," states the project manager at Fraunhofer IOF, Thomas Höing. Even though our institute has a lot of experience in such projects, CO2M is unique in terms of its complexity and demands. "Thomas Höing had to coordinate a team of more than 50 colleagues in five departments at the institute," summarizes Falk Eilenberger, head of the Department of Micro- and Nanostructured Optics. The first airworthy assembly has now been fully delivered to Thales Alenia Space, which is in charge of developing the complete CO2 measuring instrument. #News: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝗗 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 Fraunhofer IOF has been developing systems for the high-speed capture of 3D data for many years. With goCRASH3D, the Jena team is now presenting a new system that records #3Ddata during crash tests inside the test vehicle. It shows the deformation and movement of vehicle components during a collision in a way that was previously not possible or only possible to a limited extent. The goCRASH3D system was developed for and with the #automotive industry. “However, we can also imagine other applications in the safety sector or in sports medicine,” explains Kevin Srokos, project manager. In the medium term, the technology for 3D high-speed recordings is an excellent solution for the growing safety requirements in the automotive sector. Our team will be presenting the goCRASH3D system from 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟴 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟬 𝗮𝘁 VISION 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗴𝗮𝗿𝘁 (𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗼. 𝟭𝟬𝗚𝟵𝟮) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 Internationale Zuliefererbörse (IZB) 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝗳𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟮 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟰 (𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝟮, 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝟮𝟮𝟬𝟭). Fraunhofer IOF hat dies direkt geteilt
We are starting the key part in the third large-scale experiment of the #QuNET initiative! QuNET develops highly secure #QKD communication systems with a focus on government communication. The current experiment will connect several users within the Berlin metropolitan region in a quantum-secure manner for the first time beyond pure point-to-point connections. After three weeks of preparation, the experiment will connect the Fraunhofer HHI sites at Einstein- and Salzufer, the Deutsche Telekom, and the Bundesdruckerei-Gruppe sites – spanning a total of 125 km of fiber optic cable and additional free-beam connections through the air. Kicking this phase off with a visit from Daniel Behrendt from BMBF as well as Toni Markurt and Kristian Döbrich from VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH, we are looking forward to deliver results that will be an important milestone on the way to secure communication networks in Germany! 📡 Thank you Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung for the funding & support. Read more on the experiment in the ministries’ press release: https://lnkd.in/d9wi4xuU Kudos to experiment coordinator Dr. Nino Walenta and the team of 30 researchers from Fraunhofer HHI, Fraunhofer IOF, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg!

#Event: 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗵𝗼𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗢𝗙 The Photonica Summer School at Fraunhofer IOF yesterday was packed with insights into our optics and photonics research. In two lectures, the participants gained various impressions on the topics of laser and fiber technologies by Thomas Schreiber and quantum communication by Christopher Spiess. A subsequent lab tour showed them how precision optics, e.g. for space emissions, are developed at our institute. In several exchange and hands-on formats, the participants were able to think up their own career paths during the “Wayfinder-Workshop” hosted by Prof. Dr. Reinhold Pabst. In another exchange format the students had the chance to talk to doctoral scientists about their personal experience at Fraunhofer and the opportunities for PhD candidates. The LICHTWERKSTATT JENA – Open Photonics Makerspace also opened its doors to translate theory into practice during a lasercutting workshop. In the evening, we had the opportunity to direct our gaze towards the stars: A tour of the Jena Observatory (Volkssternwarte Urania e.V.) invited the participants to observe the starry sky over Jena. It was a pleasure to host the Photonica Summer School at Fraunhofer IOF once again. We hope our optics and photonics research inspired the participants for their own scientific future. Have fun at Fraunhofer IWS and Fraunhofer FEP in Dresden. #Fraunhofer #FraunhoferIPM #FraunhoferPhotonica #Photonics #SummerSchool #FraunhoferLightandSurfaces Fraunhofer IST Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI Fraunhofer IPM Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Milena Hugenschmidt
