But interacting with patients is desirable for surgical teams because it gives them continuous feedback on whether their intervention is affecting important brain functions. Studies show that such operations are more successful. However, because the mechanical opening of the skull with saws and drills is considered so stressful that many hospitals have so far avoided such surgeries. 👨⚕️ 👩⚕️ A new robot-assisted laser procedure with precise optical monitoring takes the trauma out of opening the skull: a short-pulse laser removes the hard tissue silently and almost without generating heat. It stops automatically as soon as there is only a µm-thin bone lamella left. Surgeons can then lift the circular section of skull and begin the neurological surgery. In the German-Canadian project AI-SLAM, an #AI tool is now being developed for the automated Laser Material Deposition of these parts. The software is designed to automatically capture geometries in real time during the coating process, to regulate deviations in the process parameters and to iteratively improve the process by analyzing extensive data volumes. At Fraunhofer ILT, the LMD processes are being qualified with the aim of determining when a coating is good and when it is defective. The project is streamlining the LMD process by automating it from toolpath planning to execution. The hard tissue of the spinal canal presses on the spinal cord, causing chronic pain and often even paralysis. Each year, 111,000 patients decide to undergo surgery to mechanically widen the spinal canal. The procedure, based on high-speed milling, is risky. When penetrating the hard tissue, the spinal cord gets injured in 1.5 percent of cases, causing paraplegia and incontinence.🩺 The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen is planning to use a new type of robot-assisted laser procedure that is monitored with micrometer precision for operations on the spine. The ablation of bone tissue with short laser pulses is to be monitored inline using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and will stop automatically as soon as only a few µm-thin layers of bone remain. The loosened hard tissue can then be removed with little effort.
