👟Yesterday, it was time for sports in Chemnitz: We were of course also at the start of this year's schnellestelle.de Firmenlauf Chemnitz and, despite the high summer temperatures, our 30 colleagues not only convinced with top sporting performances, but also with a lot of team spirit and good mood.   We are proud of our runners, who competed together with more than 10,000 sports enthusiasts from 600 companies. The run took them almost 5 kilometers through the city of Chemnitz, which our colleagues mastered successfully and with flying colors.   We had a lot of fun and can hardly wait for next year when it's time to say: Ready, set, go! 🏃 🎽   #FLC #FLC2024 #FirmenlaufChemnitz #Firmenlauf #Teamspirit #Fraunhofer #FraunhoferENAS

In today's world, we increasingly rely on electronics, whether in the energy, mobility, or industrial sectors and trust it quite naturally. But what makes electronic solutions trustworthy?   According to our colleague, Dr. Jan Albrecht, head of the group “Component Reliability” at Fraunhofer ENAS, electronic components and systems are only trustworthy, as long as they work reliably and safely according to their intended design. In order to further improve the trustworthiness of electronic systems, the project “Trust-E” developed over the last three years methods and processes to enhance the reliability and safety of electronic components, modules and systems.   We were part of this collaboration and spoke with our colleague, Dr. Jan Albrecht, who coordinated our work from Fraunhofer ENAS within the project, about the goals, achievements and future implications of this venture.   Curious to learn more? In electronic manufacturing, there is a growing demand for low-temperature bonding processes, as certain components are sensitive to heat and thus cannot be conventionally soldered. While gluing can be an alternative, such adhesive bonds are sensitive to humidity and higher temperatures, presenting other challenges.   Here, the thermal energy generated by integrated reactive material systems can be utilized to bond heterogeneous substrates at near room temperature instead. The metallic bonding process not only enables electrical contact, but also solves the reliability issues associated with gluing.   In collaboration with NB Technologies GmbH, Fraunhofer IKTS and VIA electronic GmbH, our colleagues at Fraunhofer ENAS Klaus Vogel and Silvia Braun published this summer their joint advances in such metallic bonding processes, depositing palladium-based integrated reactive multilayer systems (iRMS) on both silicon and ceramic substrates.   You would like to find out more on this topic? After successfully completing their three-year apprenticeship at Fraunhofer ENAS this summer, we are excited to welcome Lucie Hofmann and Kevin Müller as full-fledged microtechnologists.   The two will not only strengthen our team at Fraunhofer ENAS, but also our colleagues of our long-standing research partner, the Center for Micro and Nano Technologies (ZfM) at the Technische Universität Chemnitz.   With Lucie Hofmann joining the team in the field of physical vapor deposition (PVD) at ZfM, and Kevin Müller becoming one of our scanning electron microscopies (SEM) experts, we are securing valuable expertise to successfully engage in upcoming research and technology development projects.   To be right up close the tiniest structures with high resolution SEM or being able to evoke specific characteristics in substrates via precise PVD processes – we talked to the two of them and learned not only what fascinates them about their work as microtechnologists but also gained insight into their experiences as trainees at our institute as well as their future aspirations.   You want to find out more about their story? Make sure to check the full interview on our webpage: https://lnkd.in/eQbsxRAG   #FraunhoferENAS #YoungTalents #Training #Apprenticeship #OneTeam

Reaching out to Vietnam 🇻🇳: Last week we welcomed representatives from the Binh Duong province in Vietnam to Fraunhofer ENAS, with which we will be working closely in the future.   Our colleagues as well as representatives from Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Regionalentwicklung, Technische Universität Chemnitz, Silicon Saxony, IHK Chemnitz, iSAX GmbH & Co. KG, Stadt Chemnitz and 3D-Micromac AG seize the chance to exchange information on research and development in microelectronics, on securing a trained workforce in high-growth regions, and on intensifying German-Vietnamese relations together with our guests.   The highlight of the visit was the signing of the "Memorandum of Understanding" (MoU) between our institute director, Prof. Dr. Harald Kuhn, and Pham Ngoc Thuan, general director of the industrial real estate company Becamex IDC Vietnam, which will further develop the Binh Duong province. The MoU lays the foundation for building and expanding the partnership between the two countries and working closely together in the field of applied research and technology transfer to the industry.   The background of the visit is the development of a new microtechnology location in the high-tech region Binh Duong, which Fraunhofer ENAS will support as a valuable source of inspiration. This offers us the opportunity not only to be involved in the development of such a groundbreaking microtechnological location from the very beginning, but also to be able to actively shape this new location. The close exchange with our partners will enable us to initiate new research projects and collaborations as well as to further expand our expertise in the semiconductor sector.   Further points of contact for the joint partnership will also arise in the area of securing skilled talents. With eight universities and colleges and 108 vocational schools in the Binh Duong province, the country is actively involved in education, especially in microelectronics, which will strengthen the research expertise and innovative capacity of the future location. The semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies in Dresden is also focussing on securing highly qualified specialists for the region and intends to work more closely with the Asian country to recruit creative minds in the future as well.   We would like to thank our guests for the inspiring exchange! We were especially pleased to welcome Thomas Schmidt, Minister of State for Regional Development in Saxony, Vo Van Minh, Chairman of the People’s Committee of the Binh Duong province, Heike Vocke from iSAX GmbH & Co. KG and Thomas Aulig from the Vietnamese-German University to our institute. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Luat Nguyen, Managing Director at CICOR Vietnam Company Limited, who made it possible to get in touch with representatives of the Binh Duong region and organized the delegation's visit.   We are looking forward to the future, which will be shaped by our new partnership with Vietnam.

Faster, further, higher: Not only the athletes impressed with new heights of performance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer, which ended yesterday, but also thanks to our newly acquired high-performance computing system, so are we.   The new computing system offers nearly 2,000 CPU cores, accelerator cards, and programmable circuits with a high-performance network. This setup enables extensive parallel computing and innovative process models, accelerating simulations and expanding their scope. It supports compact, predictive, real-time process models and virtual prototyping, driving advancements and addressing the miniaturization of semiconductor components.   With MEGWARE Computer Vertrieb und Service GmbH, one of Europe’s leading supercomputing specialists, was chosen to deliver and commission the system. A big thank you for the support!   We are excited about this new addition and its impact on our prospective research and development projects. It opens up new, future-oriented perspectives for both our activities and our clients.   Interested in further details?
