#WorldHumanitarianDay | “I don't think many people realise that those working for aid organisations risk their lives. Hundreds of employees of aid organisations around the world die on missions every year while helping others." – Tom van Herwijnen. Tom is responsible for the security of CBM employees worldwide. If someone is in distress, he is called — even at night. Tom recently travelled to South Sudan, where around 20 employees work for CBM. The country is considered a forgotten crisis state. Nobody is safe, not even aid organisations. “We want our work recognised, and this should also be expressed in financial support. In times of globalisation, helping and stabilising crisis areas means strengthening the global security situation. Cutting the budget for humanitarian aid and development cooperation in these times is the wrong signal.” Aid Worker Security Report 2024 reports that more aid workers died by violence in 2023 than in any previous year on record, with 280 fatalities reported in 33 countries. More than half of these deaths (163) were aid workers killed in the first three months of the conflict in Gaza, where CBM has education projects. Guatemala's First Lady, Lucrecia Peinado, announced at a CBM dialogue that the new government commits to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. This signals a shift in government engagement for 1.3 million people facing barriers due to outdated laws and lack of accessibility. The new government in Guatemala aims to align the country's legislation with international standards and improve access to services for persons with disabilities, particularly benefiting marginalised groups like Indigenous women with disabilities. This reinforces the UN's call to leave no one behind. https://loom.ly/HoX8D54 #DisabilityInclusion #InclusiveDevelopment #Guatemala #HumanRights
