The Collaborative Research Center Transregio 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) aims with its basic research to significantly shape the digitalization of construction. Within the levels of components, processes and materials, the AMC researches resource- and energy-efficient as well as sustainable, recyclable and digital construction. Through innovative 3D printing methods, materials, processes and optimized design are completely rethought. A holistic and sustainable approach to the future direction of construction. The future of our coexistence is reinventing itself via AMC’s fundamental research. A big deal: because it’s about future generations and setting the course for our future viability. Der Sonderforschungsbereich Transregio 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) setzt sich mit seiner Grundlagenforschung zum Ziel, die Digitalisierung des Bauwesens wesentlich mitzugestalten. Innerhalb der Ebenen Bauteile, Prozesse und Materialien erforscht der AMC das ressourcen- und energieeffiziente sowie nachhaltige, recyclebare und digitale Bauen. Durch innovative 3D-Druckverfahren werden Materialien, Prozesse und optimiertes Design völlig neu gedacht. Ein ganzheitlicher und nachhaltiger Ansatz für die zukünftige Ausrichtung des Bauwesens. 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝗗-𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗺 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝘄𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿ü𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 🤖 🛠️ Fachkräftemangel und der Druck neue lokale Materialien in die Bauwertschöpfungskette einzubringen und gleichzeitig die Produktivität zu steigern, bringen zunehmend europaweit robotische Produktionsverfahren wie das 3D-Drucken in den Fokus. 🎓 Projektleiterin und Doktorandin Merve Karamara und ihr Betreuer Prof. Dr. Thomas Linner haben deshalb vor zwei Jahren begonnen das Thema schrittweise an der Fakultät für Bauingenieurswesen im Labor für Automatisierung und Robotik im Bauwesen (Building Lab) aufzubauen. Über Forschungskollaborationen (FANUC und Stevila) wurde ein Robotersetting zum großformatigen Beton 3D-Drucken im Wert von über 200.000 € entwickelt und umgesetzt. 👩🔬 Erste Druckversuche und Probekörper wurden bereits erfolgreich von Merve Karamara und dem Bacheloranten MoritzOle Bogdanski angefertigt. Das Setting wird nun in Kollaboration mit Prof. Dr. Charlotte Thiel (Labor für Betontechnologie) und ihrer Doktorandin Sophie Viktoria Albrecht insbesondere im Hinblick auf Nachhaltigkeitsthemen untersucht. Zudem wird es sukzessive den Studierenden in den Räumen der Fakultät in der Prüfeninger Straße über gemeinsame Kurse der beiden Labore zugänglich gemacht. 🤝 Insbesondere über den Forschungs- und Studienschwerpunt „Digitale Methoden im Bauwesen und Bauprojektmanagement“ wird die Thematik robotischer Produktionsverfahren praxisnah und interdisziplinär betrachtet und an weitere Themen geknüpft wie beispielsweise den Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz (Prof. Dr. Mathias Obergrießer), die Unterstützung kleinteiliger manueller Prozesse in Handwerk und Bauwesen (Prof. Florian Weininger etc.) und den Bauprozess (Prof. Klaus Hager und Prof. Dr. Thomas Linner). 📷: OTH Regensburg/Merve Karamara

📢 New Research Publication on #3DPrinting of Lightweight Concrete Components 🏗️ We are excited to share one of our latest paper, published in the proceedings of the Digital Concrete 2024 Conference! 🎉 The article presents a novel methodology for the design and #AdditiveManufacturing (AM) of functionally hybridised, lightweight #concrete building components using Selective Paste Intrusion (#SPI) and by the way, it also won a Best Paper Award at #DC2024. 🎉 This innovative approach integrates both insulating and load-bearing functions into unreinforced, prefabricated concrete elements. The #research outlines a new construction concept where manufactured components can be assembled like a 3D puzzle, providing flexibility in #design while enhancing thermal insulation and structural support. Yesterday was the defense of Johannes Diller's dissertation. Johannes has made significant contributions to the establishment of our small research group on additive manufacturing of metals at my chair and completed his doctorate with summa cum laude on the topic of 'Advancing the Understanding of the Fatigue Behaviour of AISI 316L Manufactured via Powder Bed Fusion of Metals Using Laser (PBF-LB/M).' He is also one of the first PhD graduates to emerge from the successful DFG Transregio Project TRR 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC), which is jointly conducted by Technische Universität Braunschweig and Technische Universität München . Johannes, a big thank you for your commitment to the chair, congratulations on your outstanding dissertation, and best wishes for much success and enjoyment in your new role! A big thank you also goes to the chair of the examination committee, Kathrin Dörfler, and to the two co-referees, Frank Krafft and Marcus Rutner. And for those wondering about the doctoral hat: it features, among other things, our tensegrity structure that we built for the Deutsches Museum using 3D-printed joints, as well as many banknotes. 3D printing steel for the buildings of the future 🏗️ Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, or WAAM for short, is an innovative #3DPrinting process that uses an arc to melt wire-shaped feedstock and deposit it in layers. This makes it possible to produce individual components with complex geometries. 🧱 Our picture of the month for October shows WAAM-produced steel pipes being vertically compressed in a controlled manner using a high force at the Institut für Stahlbau - TU Braunschweig (Institute of Steel Construction). For what purpose? These are load tests so that such components can later be used safely in buildings. 🏢 The project is part of the Collaborative Research Centre "Additive Manufacturing in Construction" AMC - TRR 277. It is the reinforcement that turns a concrete element into a structural form! In Digital Fabrication with Concrete (DFC) the reinforcement can be placed before, during or after the concrete application. Therefore, the role of reinforcement and its interaction with processing and form must be fundamentally rethought in DFC. Our latest Open Access paper, titled "Interaction of reinforcement, process, and form in Digital Fabrication with Concrete" aims to represent this interaction in a so-called RPF-framework. The application of this framework is illustrated using current examples, where the reinforcement processing is an interactive process partner in DFC with its own influence on the form of reinforced concrete structures, i.e., the external shape, as well as the internal guidance of the force-flows.
