💪 Championing language justice in Cameroon's courts Meet Georg Forster Fellow Endurence Dissake, Cameroon’s only forensic linguist! Dissake campaigns for easily understandable language in courts and for interpreters at trials, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their linguistic background, receives a fair treatment in court. 🚨 Why it is important: In a country where 250 languages are spoken, but in court there are only two, French and English, the languages of the two former colonial rulers, many people are wrongly convicted simply because they don't understand the charges against them. Dissake's work identifies these systemic problems and proposes practical solutions, such as legal terminology in plain language and a system of voluntary interpreters similar to that in the United States. 🌍 Cultural preservation: Dissake’s research extends well beyond the courtroom. It documents the communicative practices of Tunen-speakers in customary law court proceedings in the indigenous Banen community and ensures that the rich cultural heritage, which was largely erased by colonial rule, is preserved for future generations. 🌟 Determination: Despite the challenge of being the only forensic linguist in Cameroon and not being taken seriously by her mainly older male colleagues, Dissake remains determined. The Georg Forster Fellow is currently part of the team headed by her host, Professor Andrew Stewart, at the Universität Bayreuth's Academy of Advanced African Studies. Residency Programme meets Auswärtiges Amt! 🤝 The participants of the #HumboldtResidencyProgramme were invited to a conversation at the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany with Ralf Beste diving deep into roots of global imbalances in knowledge systems. Our takeaway: While we think of knowledge as power, it often comes down money being power. Teaching infrastructure, research materials, publishing costs – without financial resources, knowledge will not be heard. Unser Generalsekretär a.i.
Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow at Helmholtz Zentrum München studying biology of pancreas and diabetes
My Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellowship placement is ending at the end of this month and went out with a bang! I took part in the amazing study tour offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and had the chance to see the amazing place that is Germany. We visited amazing cities and landscapes, learnt about the history, industry and agricultural activities of the country as well as connected with other fellows from different disciplines, cultures and countries in the true interdisciplinary spirit that the foundation represents. #AvHStudyTour Once again grateful of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for supporting my research and once a Humboldtian always a Humboldtian.
