Although many Westchester towns will hold their displays later this week, three communities decided to kick things off with a bang, or many, at Yorktown Heights Fire Engine Company No. 1 Festival, the Taste of Somers Food Festival and the Onatru Farm Park Fireworks Celebration in Lewisboro. For many families, including Massimo and Nicholas Pulvirenti of White Plains, the celebrations offered a fun and warm Saturday after several days inside due to bad weather.

“It’s great to come out and have some fun with the family,” Massimo Pulvirenti said after playing carnival games Saturday in Yorktown Heights. “(Nicholas) loves it and has fun so the whole thing is great for us.”

The Yorktown celebration also marked the biggest fundraiser of the year for Yorktown’s Fire Engine Company No. 1. Bill Mehmzow, who sits on the firefighters board and chaired this year’s carnival, said the nice weather was a welcome relief for many families who avoided the carnival due to bad weather earlier in the week.

“This is our primary fundraiser for the year and we love to see the people come out,” he said. “It’s a well-established tradition that’s been going on since 1940 and it’s great to meet the people in the community and see them have fun while helping our department serve them in the coming year.”
