🌍At People in Need, we pride ourselves on being a Czech NGO. But what does this actually mean? 🗺️At one level, we are Czech. We work with, for, and through the Czech people. However, we are also truly international and local. It is a point of great pride that most of our colleagues come from the countries where they work. In the last year, the courage, commitment, and capabilities of our colleagues around the world helped us support: ➡️855 human rights defenders with legal, finance, and relocation support. ➡️46,000 people in the Czech Republic with social support. ➡️3.9 million people with humanitarian aid across the world. To see the global scope of our activities, feel free to check out our Annual Report for 2023: https://buff.ly/4fUayvJ

The adage that “charity begins at home” has great meaning to us at People in Need. As an NGO that is both global and local, we are proud to see the good work done by our colleague Jana Odvárková and her team, here in the Czech Republic, mentioned in today’s Financial Times. #DebtRelief and the promotion of #SocialEquality are integral to the work of our colleagues in the Social Integration team. In the past year alone, they helped over 24,000 people with cases related to indebtedness. In addition, they published the Responsible Lending Index, a vital tool for informing #consumers of the lending criteria of various financial institutions. Whilst our Social Integration team has accomplished much, they know that there is still more to be done. 👏Our colleagues at PIN #Ukraine are constantly helping Ukrainians cope with the effects of Russia's war on their country, and helping them get back on their feet after displacement and devastation. ♥️Both our #Ukrainian colleagues and the people of Ukraine are an inspiration to us all at People in Need.
Today, our People in Need Ukraine team in Pavlohrad registered 20 individuals for cash assistance at the transit center. These people were evacuated from various locations in Donetsk oblast, such as Ukrainsk and Selidove. We were able to provide this essential support thanks to the generous contributions from the people of Czech Republic. 🇨🇿🇺🇦 #StandWithUkraine

🔥🌲Long, dry summers should be a source of enjoyment across Europe. However, in #BosniaHerzegovina, summers can be a source of a particular danger: #Wildfires. 🌍🌡️Fueled by a rapidly changing climate, wildfires are a great challenge to Bosnia Herzegovina. To combat wildfires in #Bosnia's Blidinje Nature Park, we've deployed sensors, #drones, and cameras, complemented by early warning messages. 👷Being globally active in #EarlyWarningSystems, we work to share our knowledge and expertise with local governments so that they can protect their people. In our F.I.R.E.S. project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and the #Jablanica Municipality, we collaborate with the Bosnian Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Environmental Protection, civil protection services, and firefighters to help them protect the lives and livelihoods of people in Bosnia.

At PIN, we know it is essential to talk locally about our work, whether abroad in our country programmes or at home in the Czech Republic. Interacting with others and reflecting on what they say is critical to preventing groupthink or applying inappropriate solutions to problems. With this in mind, our colleagues Ivan Dzido and Simon Trantina went to #VelkeLosiny to speak to an audience of people aged 70+ about #humanitarian and #development aid, water scarcity in the world, and our #SocialWork at home. The insight, interest, and critical perspective that the audience provided was palpable in every question and response. This visit reinvigorated our belief that we must embrace multiple perspectives: to keep up with the times, we listen to young people; to hear if we still have our feet on the ground; we listen to older people—everyone has something of value to say. Thanks to Mr. Pavel Holubar for inviting us to "Senzion", a centre for older citizens who want an active retirement. If you are passing Velké Losiny, why not visit our "Journey to Water" exhibition. 🗓️Since 2014, over 12,700 civilians have been killed in hostilities in northwest #Syria alone, including at least 130 aid workers. ⚠️Today, 4.2 million people— over 80% of the population—in northwest Syria rely on #humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. 📰Read the story of our colleague Omar and other aid workers who remain committed to serving the people of northwest Syria—kindly published by United Nations OCHA. #ActForHumanity #DontLookAway #UnitedNations #WHD2024 🔗https://lnkd.in/eNZN3hC2

⚠️In #Afghanistan, decades of conflict, economic crisis, #ClimateChange, and political instability have left nearly 24 million people—mostly women & girls—in need of aid. This is akin to nearly every person in #CzechRepublic, #Slovakia, and #Hungary needing help—clearly, this cannot continue. Today, we reiterate our call for the international community to increase support & save lives. 📰Read the full statement👇 https://lnkd.in/eSCGFeRv

📢We are launching a call for proposals to support projects that create jobs, provide services, and promote sustainable livelihoods for Ukrainian refugees and Moldovans at risk of poverty. Funded through our SOS Ukraine Emergency Appeal, we aim to help local organisations and businesses address the socioeconomic challenges some communities in northern Moldova face. Eligible applicants can apply for grants to fund initiatives in one of two areas: 1) Promoting social entrepreneurship, focusing on green or socially-oriented projects. 2) Advancing employment and income-generating activities, such as job fairs, skills training, and business support. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of Ukrainians and Moldovans in need. We encourage all interested CSOs and private companies to apply. 👉For more information, visit: https://buff.ly/3WQwVJX #Moldova #Ukraine #StandWithUkraine #WithRefugees

⚠️ICYMI⚠️ In marking World Humanitarian Day, we along with 412 other humanitarian organisations, called on all Member States of the #UN General Assembly, to end the status quo that allows violations of International Humanitarian Law (#IHL) to go unpunished. Amongst other things, all members of the UNGA must: ➡️End attacks on civilians and take active steps to protect them – and the critical civilian infrastructure they rely on. ➡️Protect all aid workers, including local and national actors, and their premises and assets and facilitate their work, as called for in #UNSecurityCouncil Resolution 2730 adopted this May. ➡️Hold perpetrators to account. Those who commit violations of IHL cannot go unpunished. We will continue to support and protect people in humanitarian crises but all members of the UNGA need to ensure the safety of our staff, volunteers, and the people we serve. Today is #WorldHumanitarianDay. ⚠ Last year, 595 humanitarian workers were killed, injured or kidnapped. With the number of attacks on humanitarian workers increasing year upon year, we implore Member States to #ActForHumanity and: ☝ ensure the protection of humanitarians and civilians ✌ hold perpetrators accountable for violations of International Humanitarian Law (#IHL) At PIN, we go where the needs are but humanitarian workers should not have to risk their lives to help others in crisis. Hear from our colleagues around the world who work tirelessly, assessing and navigating the risks, to go where they are needed most ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gajCJymW We are #NotATarget #WHD2024
