T... more Textbooks play pivotal role in English language teaching and have a large number of advantages. The purpose of this research study is to scrutinize a local textbook, which is taught formally in state schools in Kurdistan "Sunrise 7". This study has endeavored to find potentials and shortcomings of the textbook in terms of level and age, fitting the context, communicativeness, authenticity and meeting needs. The analysis was supported by the principles and theories of FL/ SL learning and teaching and SLA. The checklist of McDonough and Shaw (1993) was adapted for collecting and analyzing data. The qualitative method was used in this research study to collect and analyze data in the coursebook.Sunrise 7 could have a lot of strengths and some weaknesses. One hand, the coursebook can fit context in Kurdistan, as it is EGP. It may realize the key tents of CLT paradigm. As well as, the language input may be semi-authentic. It could meet the learner's needs. What is more, it could suit the age of learners in Kurdistan. On the downside, the level of Sunrise 7 seems lower than 7 grader in Kurdistan schools.

The primary objective is to assess the merits and demerits of this coursebook from the perspectives of experienced educators in Kurdistan, employing the evaluative checklist developed by Cunningsworth (1995). The use of this evaluative scheme is justified by its structured, systematic, and efficient approach, offering a thorough, accurate assessment. The study employs a mixed-methods research design to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the coursebook. The findings highlight several positive aspects of "Sunrise 10," demonstrating alignment with the goals and objectives of the ELT program in Kurdistan. However, certain shortcomings are identified, including the absence of pair-work activities and the need for additional video resources and unit revisions. Additionally, the study raises concerns about the appropriateness of certain cartoon illustrations for the intended age group (16+). Nevertheless, the coursebook effectively incorporates the four main language skills and integrated language skills, maintaining a balanced approach. The study also suggests that "Sunrise 10" is likely to adhere to communicative language teaching (CLT) principles due to its task-based activities. Furthermore, while the coursebook offers a wide range of topics, it may lack sufficient content related to Kurdish contexts. The study concludes that "Sunrise 10" requires an update since it was last revised nearly two decades ago. Importantly, the coursebook is found to avoid negative cultural stereotyping. In summary, the strengths of "Sunrise 10" appear to outweigh its weaknesses, as perceived by the assessors, with an effectiveness rating of approximately 74% and an ineffectiveness rating of around 26%.

The study focuses on identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the coursebook and determining its appropriateness from the perspective of Kurdish educators. This applied linguistics research employed A mixed methodological approach for data collection and analysis. The evaluation utilized Cunningsworth's (1995) systematic, reliable, economic, and comprehensive evaluative scheme for textbook analysis. The findings indicate that the textbook demonstrates overall appropriateness concerning aims and approaches, design and organization, language content, topics, methodology, teacher's book, and practical considerations. The degree of appropriateness of "Sunrise 12" is estimated to be approximately 72%, while the degree of inappropriateness is around 28%. The research aims to provide insights for curriculum designers, educators, and material developers to enhance the coursebook's efficacy and better meet the needs of Kurdish learners.

Mixed methodological approaches were used in this evaluative study. The data were gathered numerically by rating the checklist scale to value each criterion. The instrument which was used to collect data was a evaluative checklist because it is a systematic and include all criteria for investigating. The findings of this applied linguistic study illustrates that Sunrise (9) can be communicative textbook since it applies the key tents of CLT paradigm. It may fit Kurdish learners, might have has attractive physical appearance and supplementary aids. In Addition, it is possible that the textbook has a good balance and integration of skills. On the other hand, the textbook do not cover enough topics about Kurdish culture as it is written especially for Kurdish leaners. Furthermore, it lacks videos which are essential visual elements. As well as, the most of tasks of the coursebook look they are not interesting. Consequently, the pros of the textbook can outweigh the cons of it.

The study critically examines various aspects of the coursebook, including its aims and objectives, design and organization, language content, topics, methodology, supplementary aids, and alignment with learner needs based on the perspectives of the assessors in Kurdistan. To facilitate this evaluation, the evaluative scheme proposed by Cunningsworth (1995) has been adapted as the primary instrument for this linguistic study. The use of an evaluative checklist is justified due to its effectiveness, precision, efficiency, systematic approach and convenience. The research adopts a mixed methodology to delve into the nuances of this linguistic study. Initial findings suggest that the aims and objectives of Sunrise (11) seem well-suited to the unique teaching context in Kurdistan. The design and organization of the coursebook show promising attributes, with visual appeal, logical grading and sequencing, contextualized grammar, and a range of supplementary aids. In terms of language content, Sunrise (11) displays strengths in fostering both formal and lexical competence. However, it may benefit from further attention to vocabulary aspects, such as multiple word meanings and word formation. Regarding language skills, the textbook appears to strike a potent balance, effectively covering both receptive and productive skills, and demonstrating integration across language domains.
