Penn State Extension Master Watershed tree and shrub sale for fundraising
The Penn State Extension's Master Watershed program is holding its fifth annual native tree and shrub sale this fall as a fundraiser to support watershed activities, and to promote healthy watersheds. Scientists have found that trees benefit the environment, provide support for birds, insects and other wildlife, as well as reducing stormwater runoff, filtering pollutants, and decreasing soil erosion. Whether it be for landscaping, shade, or supporting the environment, it is an excellent opportunity to order a Pennsylvania native tree or shrub from the Master Watershed Program. The Steward Program is taking orders through Aug. 28, and all trees and shrubs must be pre-ordered online or by phone. One-day curbside pickups are planned in September or October throughout 27 locations across the state. Allegheny County curbside pickup is scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024, 10 AM - noon at South Park Skating Rink: 300 Corrigan Dr, Bethel Park, PA 15102 The sale offers 18 varieties of native trees and shrubs. Details about trees, such as blooming time, mature height, sun and soil moisture requirements, are outlined on the order website. Order forms and relevant information can be found on the Penn State Extension website at https://extension.psu.edu/mws-tree-sale. Master Watershed Stewards guarantee healthy trees and shrubs at distribution. They are sold in 1-gallon containers for $20, 2-gallon containers for $30, or 3- gallon containers for $40. Due to variations in planting, care, and site conditions, refunds are not possible after tree pickup. Besides Allegheny County, other pickup locations are in the following counties: Adams, Berks, Bradford, Bucks, Centre, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Franklin, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lycoming, McKean, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Warren, Wayne, Westmoreland, Wyoming, and York. Residents are urged to consider their above and below ground utilities, and to think about the mature growth size of the tree when choosing one for their property. Master Watershed Stewards suggest always calling 811 before digging. For general questions about the Native Tree and Shrub Sale, please contact Natalie Marioni at [email protected] or 717-240-6500.
