If you wish to use my work, I recommend you read this page first: Note: especially commercial use as it may require special attention. I can help you with that, you can reach me on don@logan.com.
Attribution License Conditions
[edit]Give credit where credit is due. My photos are not in the public domain.
[edit]Thank you very much for the admiration of my efforts! It is costly to produce this quality of photograph and I ask just one thing from you, Attribute the work properly. This applies to everyone, be it to use a photo on your personal blog or to print it in a magazine.
Almost half of my photos are licensed Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0, a little under a third is licensed as Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 and the rest as Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. The first two are essentially the same, Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 does not require you to "share alike". Please pay attention to the license on the particular photo you want to use so you can provide the correct license to your audience.
I kindly ask you to credit me as follows:
"Photograph by Don Ramey Logan"
If the publication is not English, you may replace "Photograph by" with the equivalent in the language of the publication. Also provide a link to the photo on Commons and the license. See https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/Best_practices_for_attribution to get it right. This is an ideal example:
Production cameras photograph by Don Ramey Logan is licensed under CC BY 4.0.
This would typically provide attribution on a website. For other media, like books, attribution is done slightly different. If you have questions about that, find out more on the Creative Commons website and the legal code for the licenses. Each file has an EXIF data that provides the photos' original date, you are invited to display that as well, but it is not required.
Attribution should not be hidden, or simply left in the file name or EXIF data. It needs to be visible.
'Please note that Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons do NOT own my work.' Attribution like "Photo from Wikipedia" or "Photo from Wikimedia Commons" is not sufficient, even with a link.
What does ShareAlike mean? Can I use your photos for commercial purposes?
[edit]ShareAlike means that any derivative work from my photos needs to be released with the same or compatible license. Depending on the type of publication, you may have to release your work with a free license. This may be an issue for many commercial uses. The attribution that is required may also not be desirable for some commercial uses.
If you are not sure if this applies to you, you can contact me by e-mail: don@logan.com. If you don't want or are unable to "Share Alike" or unwilling/unable to attribute me properly, you can license the photo from me. This will remove your obligation to "Share Alike", attribute me or provide links.
I use automated services that scan the web for use of my photos without proper attribution. My photos can be used free of charge if you fully respect the Creative Commons license. If you don't respect the Creative Commons license (or obtain a license from me directly), it means you don't have any license to use the photo and would be violating my copyright. I take copyright violations seriously and will enforce my rights if needed so make sure you get it right.
I would appreciate notification if you used my work outside Wikimedia. don@logan.com gets to me; you're invited to use it. I am tired of policing my work. If you violate the law, you will have to accept the consequences.
Beware that some social media platforms require their users to give the platform a sub-licensable license for any file their users upload. Platforms like Facebook do not recognize Creative Commons licenses and don't adhere to their attribution requirements, so only the copyright holder can provide the permission as described in their terms of service:
- 1. Facebook Terms of Service (12 January 2024). "when you share, post, or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights (like photos or videos) on or in connection with our Products, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, and worldwide license"
