The Windsor family descends from Sir Andrew Windsor, who was knighted in 1513 and made 1st Baron Windsor in 1529. The 7th Baron Windsor was made 1st Earl of Plymouth in 1682, and a son of his was made 1st Viscount Windsor in 1699. The earldom of Plymouth became extinct in 1843, but was recreated in 1905 for Robert George Windsor-Clive (1857–1923) and his successors. The seat of the Windsor-Clive-Plymouth family was Hewell Grange near Tardebigge (Worcestershire) and is now Oakly Park, Bromfield near Ludlow (Shropshire).
