Wolfenden
Hi, with regard to <https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Richard_Norris_Wolfenden.jpg&diff=77401078&oldid=77389041>, I think this falls outside of significant doubt as intended by the precautionary principle. That a photographer of this official portrait (presumably over 20 years old in 1885) was the same Jones as a photographer working with others over 60 years later, at an age of 80+, seems to be stretching interpretation into highly unlikely speculation. It could well be that the photography business ran in the family and someone was named after their relative. Considering the expert evidence already supporting this photograph, a further deletion review would probably need a bit more evidence to create "significant" doubt. However, if someone can find more information on Jones and his business to throw more light on the history of the photograph (either way), this might become a useful liminal case study. Cheers --Fæ (talk) 07:39, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- Where does your 1885 figure come from? The portrait is dated c.a. 1905. The only mention of 1885 in the DR is Ottava speculating a birth at least 20 years before 1905. It's not unlikely that someone born in 1885 would still be working in 1946 (aged 61). At this stage I'm not worried enough to open a DR, but I wanted the note on the file to be balanced and include evidence on both sides of the equation. --99of9 (talk) 07:49, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- I was going by the text that Rd232 added which is the sentence before your addition on the image page. If the 1885 date is overly speculative then it probably should be hooked out. It may actually be worth writing back to Damkaer to let him know the image is still on Commons and see if there is anything he has in his research material as evidence as to whether the same Jones as took the photo was the chap active after WWII. Sadly, my OTRS access to Commons permissions was recently removed, so I can no longer volunteer to help in this regard. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 08:34, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
RFA questions
Can you take a look at Commons:Administrators/Requests/January, in the comment section? This user already left a neutral vote based mostly on file-related technical questions for another RFA; I just don't see what these questions have to do with the role of a Commons admin? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 21:18, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll reply there. --99of9 (talk) 00:15, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- Poor January! Let's just hope this Incnis fellow doesn't get any more expansive. Pretty soon he'll have to prepare a questionnaire he can link to. ;) Anyways, thanks for answering. INeverCry 01:07, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- Why poor? Whenever you apply for a job, it's expected that you will have to answer questions. The question has simple answers: w:Lossy compression and Jpegcrop. And January does do a lot of cropping, so it's specific to her line of work, precisely the opposite of the general questionnaires they hand out on en-wiki RFAs. --99of9 (talk) 01:26, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- It was an obviously unsuccessful attempt at a joke on my part. I was probably overreacting a bit on this whole deal with the question though. INeverCry 01:55, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

- Great! As a first step I've unprotected your userpage so you can get it back in shape. Once that's done, can you post your request on COM:BN, so it's recorded in the usual place and transparent to all Bureaucrats (and it would probably help to link to where you requested removal)? Thanks. --99of9 (talk) 10:38, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello and Sat Sri Akaal! I'm changing my username globally as per the the meta request. So please oblige, renaming my account to "itar buttar" or please check the request to verify and act accordingly. Thanks a lot. --tari buttar [talk] 12:51, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

- Thanks a lot dear, I've been renamed here. Please help: I had SUL for the previous username, TariButtar, but now when I checked the same for the new, Itar buttar, the tools says, there is no SUL and no global user with this name, accordingly. How to create the SUL like before? --itar buttar [talk] 03:53, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

PD -> CC
Hi 99of9, it was my mistake to use PD license, so I've correct the mistake. --F l a n k e r (talk) 15:07, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- Unfortunately that's a mistake you cannot ever correct. The files were released into the public domain years ago. Reusers are already entitled to use them however they wish. You will never be able to enforce a CC-license, because the the content is in the public domain. --99of9 (talk) 22:56, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Request: no-FoP Italy
Hi Toby. When you have a moment, could you do me a favor. I decided to occupy my time to list the no-FoP files in Italy. It has been a long and difficult work that needs to be reviewed by administrators. Could you check if everything is correct on User:Raoli/Deletion requests/FoP Italy? Thanks! Inquery
Edits such as this are a great concern to me. Why exactly are you shadowing me on meta and on commons? I am not going to bother with linguistic reasons until this issue is clarified. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 22:35, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- I saw that because I watch Rd232's page. He is undoubtedly a mover and shaker on Commons, so I'm often interested by discussions he's involved in - as are 68 others. If there's anyone I'm stalking here it's him. So far, you have not been added to my watchlist. I can't remember when I read the meta RFC. I think it might have been in June when I was applying for rights over there. I took a look around at their RfCs. I have no particular opinion on Kurdish, except that the Kurdish community should be fully and proactively consulted. It would probably have helped Rd232 if you had flagged yourself that this issue has had previous discussion in other forums. Out of interest, do you have a stake/conflict of interests in the Kurdish language/ethnicity issue? --99of9 (talk) 00:38, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
- For starters the RfC covers the rename of an entire wiki, not how language codes are used in templates. Are you aware that the proposed change replaces the word "Kurdish" with "Kurdish" but in Arabic script? Currently we are forcing Latin script on people who cannot read Latin script. Consider File:Pięść (ubt).jpeg for an example of the problem.
- As for specifics on the linguistics, currently ku.wikipedia is predominantly written with the Kurmanji dialect (for all practical purposes) and this dialect is the only dialect written with a Latin alphabet. Other two dialects of Kurdish are entirely written in Arabic script. ckb Wikipedia is written entirely in the Sorani dialect since it is the Sorani Kurdish Wikipedia. sdh Kurdish Wikipedia has a very small existence in incubator. http://lmp.ucla.edu/Profile.aspx?LangID=61&menu=004 has more on the linguistics.
- The only problem I have with ku.wikipedia community is their complete disregard of copyrights. I have been among the many people asking them to clean up the copyright graveyard on ku.wikipedia. Honestly, I do not see why ku.wikipedia or any other local Wikipedia is to be consulted in regards to a matter that entirely concerns commons.

Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture
Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RiverRedGum_CentralAustralia.JPG). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: website removed
2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: website removed
3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: website removed Slang Dictionary link at: website removed

Talkback
Please see Commons:Bots/Requests/Smallbot 7. You're welcome to suggest a naming scheme.Smallman12q (talk) 02:46, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
I noticed you kept this by changing the title, but it's a fake picture. The user who edited it removed the watch chain, handkerchief, and lapel piece from the original, which means that is not an accurate representation of the subject. If it's a question of crop, just crop the original photo. MSJapan (talk) 01:24, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've added the details you wrote about the photographic manipulation to the file description page. We do have many retouched photographs on Commons. They're not necessarily deleted, because they may be useable, just not to represent the original historical scene. If you want to renominate, be clear that you think it is now out of COM:SCOPE due to the file modifications. Any problem with the description is not a good reason for deletion, because the description can easily be changed. --99of9 (talk) 03:47, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
Appreciate Your Suggestions
Thank you for the suggestions re "freeware" and posting a short message that points image owners to my User Page. I already created that, as well as a Talk page. Current problem for me is that my website link is watchlisted, so I cannot include the full link on my User Page. I request that my link be removed from the watchlist so that I can comply with your suggestion. Henceforth I will only include the user's image link and a reference to my User Page.
How can this situation be resolved favorably for me and be acceptable to Wikipedia? Since you viewed my explanation on the Commons: Administrators Noticeboard, what more is needed for the resolution?
A format that I suggest to an image owner is as follows:
Title: "Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture"
I linked your image (full Wikimedia image link) to my free, non-commercial website. Please view my User Page (Duane_Hurst) for details or communicate with me at (talk).
My user page will contain a brief description and purpose of my free site.
Thank you for the help and I hope to receive a favorable resolution. It is my intention to provide a free service to benefit a wide community. Regards,

Circle Packing pictures
Hello!
Thanks for all those nice wikipedia pictures of the optimal solutions to the "circle in square" packing problem on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_packing_in_a_square!
Just a small doubt, concerning the picture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Circles_packed_in_square_10.svg for the case N = 10: In the paper [C. de Groot, R. Peikert, D. Würtz, The Optimal Packing of Ten Equal Circles in a Square, IPS Research Report No, 90-12, ETH Zurich, 1990., available at http://www.scivis.ethz.ch/publications/pdf/1990/degroot1990.pdf], the authors write (page 2) that "no circle is free i.e. no circle can be moved around. All are fixed either by a neighbor or by the boundary of the square." However, in your picture, the circle at the right bottom is clearly free, touching no other circles nor any edge.
Surely, their solution is not unique, but still an optimal one, as they show, and the number of free circles should be the same among all optimal solutions. Hence, for me there is a contradiction there.
Where did you take the circle center data from?
Thanks a lot for clarifying this!
Wurzel33
- Thanks for the note, I'll try to get to this sometime early in the new year. My figure may well be wrong. At the time I didn't have any circle-center data, but I had edge lengths, and I thought I matched all the edge lengths, but perhaps I had an old suboptimal length. --99of9 (talk) 22:14, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the answer. So, you solved the packing problem on-the-fly, and then looked up, every time, if the square had the known minimal possible size, up to numerical limits? That's impressive. I thought you had used "official" coordinates such as the ones given on www.packomania.com ... Anyway, Happy Christmas!
- Thanks. It was a while back, but I think I constructed the square of the proposed size, then tried to fit all the circles within it. Merry Christmas to you too.--99of9 (talk) 21:41, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've fixed this now. The difference between the packings is so miniscule I couldn't really tell the difference with my graphics editor, but I'll trust the proof! --99of9 (talk) 02:34, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi 99of9, why did you undo this edit of mine? As far as I know, birds do have beaks. Lotje ʘ‿ʘ (talk) 12:58, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, birds have beaks, and the picture is still in Category:Beaks. But the category you removed Category:Animal mouths (open) is specifically for OPEN mouths. By removing that category, you prevent people looking for open mouths from finding birds. We do not (yet) have a subcategory Category:Beaks (open). When we do, the picture will not need to be in either Beaks or Animal mouths (open), because it will be a subcategory of both. Feel free to create that and then remove both current categories.--99of9 (talk) 13:40, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Photo Rights - St Johns Ashfield Stained Glass Good Shepherd Portrait
Hi I'm making an ad for a church in a elementary school yearbook and this picture goes with it perfectly. There are going to be about 250 copies of the book. At first I thought it would be okay if I put your name at the bottom of the ad on all the copies but now I'm not sure, could you please help?
File:StJohnsAshfield_StainedGlass_GoodShepherd_Portrait_cropped.jpg
- Thanks for contacting me. Ideally I'd prefer an attribution line something like: "glass: Alfred Handel, photo: Toby Hudson (Wikimedia Commons, CC-BY-SA-3.0)". Best regards. --99of9 (talk) 23:43, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Hello Toby, thank you so much for making this picture available - Alfred Handel has made a wonderful interpretation of Christ in this stained glass. I would like to use it on my website about the composer Martin Shaw, to illustrate an article about The Redeemer, his cantata for Lent. I will put in the attribution as above. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Please answer my Question
Hi there my friend! I have a Question and need an answer as soon as possible. I'm translating all NFL teams wiki articles to Arabic wiki, can I use their logos to put on the Arabic wiki or not? b/c it says that the team's logos are all under COPY RIGHTS? ... for example, can I use this logo File:San Diego Chargers logo.svg in the team's Arabic wiki article or not (without creating any problems for myself)? And can I use the NFL logo on the Arabic wiki article? --- I'll be waiting for your answers, Thank you very much! --Qrhoo (talk) 04:45, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know the policy of the Arabic wiki about Non-free media (e.g. if it allows "fair use"), but I do know that such images should not be hosted on Commons. --99of9 (talk) 04:57, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Train vs Railway
Hi I think the redirection of Railway Stations to Train Stations (In Australia) is a problem - to what level do you want have a conversation about this - many locations in Australia still call them Railway, and the usage of Train is not universal... do we agree to disagree - or which direction would you like to take on this? your call. sats (talk) 03:39, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- which means I am putting the whole of http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Train_stations_in_Australia to question as well, and anything related... It smacks of the south african on wp en who tries to re-invent rail material in the context of his world view as opposed to actual usage - at least on wp en there is acknowledgement of differences in terminology between north america/uk/europe for a whole range of rail things sats (talk) 03:45, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Rename my username
Hi 99of9. Can you rename me "Clément Bardot" please ? Thanks --FF23-fr (talk) 16:16, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
- Please can you add your request at Commons:Changing_username? Thanks. --99of9 (talk) 04:31, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Good update, feel free to make and additions/changes you feel would be useful. --Captain-tucker (talk) 18:05, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, nothing more at the moment, but I'll keep it in mind if I think of something. --99of9 (talk) 12:36, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Flags
Thanks for the flags, very handy. I certainly have no objections.--Ymblanter (talk) 07:05, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

My images deletion
Hi, regarding the images that "I" uploaded and then deleted in the last days, I want you to know that I just used the flickr uploader to do a mass upload of those images: about 1600. I didn't checked them all. So if you want to delete some of them, I support you. --Viscontino (talk) 12:20, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the note, I was confused because usually uploaders vote to keep their images. Now that I've briefly looked at Category:Files from Simpio96 stream, I'm even more concerned. Did you notice the caption "non utilizzare senza il mio consenso grazie"? It seems that the photographer does not understand the CC-license. We may have to delete them all? --99of9 (talk) 12:35, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- We had a very long talk with Simpio96 (take a look here). She wanted to contribute, but she didn't have the time to edit each single picture (and I uploaded all of them right after she changed the license). The only ones that she wanted to be removed were her daughter's photos. I think we can keep the other ones. --Viscontino (talk) 14:55, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
Congratulations! Bot task is approved. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:40, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
- Please use subst the following statement so as to avoid reparsing every time the page is changed:
{{#ifeq: N/A | N/A | | (N/A) }}
. If the statement is coming from a template, please use safesubst. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:21, 31 March 2013 (UTC)- Ok, thanks, I didn't know about safesubst. I'll fix these soon. --99of9 (talk) 23:32, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
- Done --99of9 (talk) 00:19, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Mickey
Hello! There seem to be many images in Category:Mickey Mouse which have Mickey in prominence. Shouldn't those also be nominated for deletion? §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 13:32, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Short answer: many of them should be. But each needs careful consideration. --99of9 (talk) 22:03, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- Well am sure you will do it when you get time. I am still not quite clear as to what exactly is copyvio in this case. It seems to have geography involved as well. Hence i wont nominated the whole category as of now. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 04:50, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

DelReqHandler issue
Hi 99of9. Any idea on how to get some attention on this issue? I don't want the DRs to pile up, but this problem has been going on for about 6 weeks now. Thanks for your time. INeverCry 19:04, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
- No special ideas apart from voting it higher, sorry. --99of9 (talk) 22:58, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
request that files removed by another user be restored
Hi 99of9, I am new to Wikimedia Commons (well, intermittently active) and I posted two images to include in two Wikipedia articles. Some time ago, another user requested that they be deleted. For good reason: I wasn't clear about permissions. I now have emails from both copyright holders granting free use of the photographs and I requested that the permissions be reviewed. Is there some way for me to follow up? To know if my requests were submitted and are being reviewed? Artandimage (talk) 21:45, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'm sorry for some reason I overlooked this. The correct method is written up at COM:OTRS. --99of9 (talk) 09:55, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Site statistics box
Hi 99of9
I hope you won't mind if I copy your really useful 'site statistics' box for my own userpage? --MichaelMaggs (talk) 11:02, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- Of course. As you'll see from the template name, it's not actually mine. --99of9 (talk) 13:07, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 12:58, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, that is fine. I cannot help translate though. --99of9 (talk) 13:06, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
[again and again]
- Yes, I saw! --99of9 (talk) 15:20, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Ahem, sorry, it seems the cluster disruption confused the bot. :( You were selected as victim of its revenge. --Nemo 15:29, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

What is this? -FASTILY 20:12, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- It's due to a field in the census which is tracked in their tables, but is theoretically impossible. (e.g. lone parent aged 0-14, when they only ask over 15's about parental status). They naturally come to 0% in every district, so the map is pretty useless. After I noticed this issue, I made the category to catch (and delete) them, but future revisions of the creation and upload scripts will block them before they get uploaded. (I haven't implemented this yet, but probably soon). Looking at it now, it looks like I caught one set of fields that shouldn't have been caught, so I'll get the script to take them out now. --99of9 (talk) 20:29, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- (So any maps in there that look blank - which they all *should*, can be deleted immediately) --99of9 (talk) 20:38, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Done I've deleted that batch, and hardcoded the list of exceptions, so the cat has fulfilled its purpose - now deleted. --99of9 (talk) 19:13, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Tom Wills image
Hello, there's an image on Commons with an incorrect filename - the image is a photograph, not a painting. I contacted the uploader and he suggested I ask an admin about having it corrected. Can you change the filename or should it be reuploaded? Thanks. - HappyWaldo (talk) 17:24, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- Done Thanks for picking that up. In future there's a template you can use to alert administrators and file movers: {{Rename}}. --99of9 (talk) 14:27, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Little problem
Little problem here: Commons:Database reports/Self-categorized categories. --Foroa (talk) 08:12, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll figure out what caused that. --99of9 (talk) 08:23, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
- Done Thanks for letting me know. Just a dumb cut-paste typo. --99of9 (talk) 08:36, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Appropriately Licensed
You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Thanks -- Colin (talk) 22:56, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
RfCU
Hi 99of9, I just discovered that Marcus Cyron added a (personal) comment to de:Wikipedia:Kurier#Gecheckte User. 1.293 people have this page on their watchlist. Because I think it's just fair if the candidate or the proposing user has the ability to respond, I intend to post this text to the RfCU and would also agree translating a response back to German. Do you think it's wise doing so or will it likely evoke more drama? -- Rillke(q?) 22:22, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
