2024 NBA draft profile for Providence guard Devin Carter

The 2024 NBA draft is roughly one month away and here at College Sports Wire we are evaluating the college basketball stars who are hoping to hear their name called in June.

Today we discuss Providence guard Devin Carter, who exploded last season for the Friars. In the absence of wing Bryce Hopkins – who suffered a torn ACL – Carter took over this team, averaging a touch under 20 points per game along with 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals, and one block. He was an efficient 56.3% on two pointers and 37.7% from distance, on 6.8 attempts per game, and was among the best wing defenders in the entire country.

Carter’s elite wingspan and jumping ability turned heads at the combine, and the latest report is that he has received a promise in the first round.

Below is a look at Carter’s draft profile, including his measurements at the combine, strengths and weaknesses as a player, and current projected draft range and team fits in the NBA:

Strengths

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

  • Elite defensive guard at point of attack, generates steals thanks to quick hands and strength
  • Rebounds extremely well for his position, thanks to his elite wingspan and jumping ability, and can guard multiple guard positions
  • Good line driver and finisher around the rim, also adept at using strength to finish through contact and get to the free throw line where he is productive as well
  • High level three point shooter, making him a three-dimensional scorer who should make an impact offensively from Day 1
  • Able to play either guard position offensively, always in the right position and makes winning plays. NBA bloodlines (his father is former NBA guard Anthony Carter) helps as well

4
Weaknesses

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

  • Just 6’2 without shoes, could limit his ability to guard bigger wings even though he plays bigger
  • Wired more to score than to pass, which makes him more of an off-ball guard. 6’2 off ball guards is a rare archetype, and could limit his range at the next level
  • Great outside shooter and finisher at the rim, but limited in the mid-range which could elevate his game to another level.
  • Turned the ball over quite a bit last year. High usage rate was a contributing factor, but Carter plays incredibly fast and sometimes gets too sped up and makes mistakes.
