Drawing on Emif Norte survey, we analyse the prevalence of victimization of robbery or assault to migrants according to migrant's sociodemographic characteristics as well as the journey characteristics, and we use a logistic regression model to assess the way in which such characteristics are associated with being victim of that crime. Findings suggest that migrants who crossed through Tamaulipas and those who hired coyotes in transit or at the border have higher odds of being robbed or assaulted, in contrast, the individual sociodemographic characteristics and crossing with family/friends are not associated with being robbed or assaulted.

The objective of this work is to analyze the types of journeys undertaken by Honduran migrant men... more The objective of this work is to analyze the types of journeys undertaken by Honduran migrant men in irregular transit through Mexican territory to the United States, by focusing on a set of characteristics of the journeys that are directly shaped by the agency of migrants: the use of coyotes (smugglers), the selection of routes, modes of transport, the support of assistance networks, and being employed en route. Based on data from the Survey on Migration on the Southern Border, a latent class analysis is used to identify groups (classes) of migrants who made the same types of journeys, that is, they had similar response patterns with respect to the selected indicators. Additionally, the article analyzes how the types of journeys are stratified according to migrants’ socioeconomic status. As a result of the analysis, three types of migrations in transit are identified: migrants who travel “supported by coyotes”; those “supported by assistance networks” and those who migrate “autonomously”.

Drawing on the Emif-Norte survey, we examine the diversity of forms of abandonments and their adverse impacts to migrants while crossing the border; we discuss the agency capacity of migrants to anticipate and control the migration process in order to manage the risks of clandestine travel; and we use a logistic regression model to analyze the role played by the selection of the smuggler and the physical fitness of migrants in the risk of migrants to be abandoned by smugglers. Our findings suggest the presence of migrants with profiles vulnerable to abandonment (i.e. women, not having previous migration experience to the USA, hiring smugglers in border towns, or paying low smuggler fees), and preventive and protective strategies to reduce such risk (i.e. hiring smugglers in the place of origin, physical training prior to the journey or traveling accompanied by family members and friends), which are within the reach of some migrants more than others.

A theoretical model of victimization of transit migrants is developed. Drawing on the Survey on Migration in the Southern Border of Mexico 2018 and 2019, a descriptive and logistic regression analysis is carried out to analyze how migrants’ sociodemographic characteristics and journey characteristics are associated with victimization events. The article shows that migrants who used trains and trucks and who received support from assistance networks (e.g., migrant shelters) had higher relative odds of being robbed or assaulted, whereas migrants who hired coyotes had lower relative odds of being victimized. The findings of this work highlight the usefulness of surveys conducted on migrants after deportation to analyze the victimization that international migrants suffer during their dangerous journeys across borders and territories.
