She tried these out and was very pleased with them!
I had high hopes for this pruner as I am a fan of Opinel knives. It looked like it could be the perfect compliment to the Opinel #8 or #8 Garden knife. While the design of this pruner is very nice, and I think the thumb controlled blade lock and blade opening width adjustment is brilliant engineering, the pruner unfortunately did not perform well in some situations.
Upon receiving the pruner, the blade was not fully closed in the locked position. This meant the sharp tip of the blade was exposed. I noticed the plastic lock mechanism would retract slightly from the retaining notch when I released the handle. I tightened the nut on the lock mechanism, and this kept the locking mechanism in the notch and the blade remained locked into place properly. The downside is that this made operating the locking mechanism more difficult to engage.
Next, I tested the two blade opening sizes. I have large hands, so prefer the fully open setting for comfort and for getting maximum cutting leverage with larger branches. Both positions functioned as expected. In most cases, I was able to control the adjustment/lock mechanism with one hand using my thumb. However, when working in the early morning in the presence of dew, the thumb control did not have enough grip and required two-handed operation to make adjustments or open/close the pruner.
My first tests were with soft cuttings. It was time to flip some garden beds for fall, and I used the pruners to prune tomato vines, bean plants, cucumber and cantaloupe vines, okra plants, and to cut bell peppers. On these soft, green plants, the pruner performed perfectly. Cuts were clean and efficient. I was clearing a densely planted bed of bush beans, cutting the plants off at the base, and the hidden spring design was appreciated as no debris could fall into the spring mechanism and cause clogs. The blade was sharp and cut through all green stems with ease including the larger and tougher tomato plants and okra plants. For this use, I would give the pruner 5 stars.
When I turned my attention to pruning shrubs and tree limbs, this is where the pruner unfortunately performed poorly. The documentation says the pruner can handle up to 20mm cutting capacity. This is slightly greater than 3/4". The pruners did not perform well on green woody cuttings half that size. I attempted to prune back some American Beech branch tips that were growing into our driveway area. These branches were no larger than a pencil and the pruner struggled. A cardinal sin in pruners is when they do what I refer to as smear. This is when the pruners don't sever the branch, but instead cut mostly through the branch, but then smear the bark and cambium layer between the blades. It causes the pruners to lock closed on the partially cut branch, and it requires two hands be used to pry open the pruner to remove the partially severed material. On the small beech branches, this happened repeatedly. I also had similar results with red maple prunings. Curious about this poor performance, I pulled out a pair of Corona Professional series (Felco clones) and a cheap as dirt $5 pair of pruners from Lidl. Both the Corona and the cheap Lidl pruners cut the beech and maple branches with ease. Shockingly, the Lidl pruners performed best, and they also have a size adjustment and locking mechanism.
What I like about the pruners:
*Design looks nice
*Stainless steel blade is very nice. Same steel used in Opinel stainless knives. It should resist resins and acids in plant material.
*Hidden spring is a nice feature assuming it holds up and doesn't break.
*Size Adjustment and Closure thumb control is unique and interesting engineering/design
*Great pruners for soft green work.
What I don't like:
*Blade is not replaceable. Hopefully this isn't necessary, but time will tell. Keep away from metal trellis, fencing, etc.
*Size Adjustment and Closure thumb control is a cool design, but in functionality it can be stiff and hard to operate without the thumb slipping. It needs deeper ridges or a tab on top to better control.
*Did not perform well on green woody branches. Pruners smeared branches and did not cut cleanly.
*Cutting size overstated for green woodier material.
Jury Still Out - Concerns:
*Blade is not replaceable. Will it hold up well? Will encounters with metal fencing, trellis, etc. damage the blade
*Will the hidden internal spring last? What happens if it breaks? Currently, there are no spare parts listed.
*Does the wooden handle have a full metal tang inside? Unknown. If not, the handle could break when using strong grip strength to get through stubborn green woody material, especially material over 1/2"
Final Thoughts:
I wanted this pruner to work well and wanted to give it 5 stars, because I really like how it looks. For purely soft cuttings, I think it works well and earns the 5 stars, but for woody green cuttings, it does not perform its most basic task, and I have to give it 2 stars for a final combined score of 3 stars.
