Purchase options and add-ons

  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. (Refer to Aqara's website for the list of Aqara Zigbee devices exposed to Matter). It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app (currently limited to select device types, will be expanded over time). As a Matter bridge, it exposes existing Aqara Zigbee devices to Matter-compatible apps such as Apple Home. Supports up to 127 Thread/Zigbee devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (*Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs. (Reconfiguration is needed for Matter and HomeKit; Cloud integrations like Alexa retain all the configurations.)
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (*2A USB power adapter is not included. )
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Does NOT work with third-party products
    1 out of 5 stars

Does NOT work with third-party products

The claims Aqara makes regarding this item's capabilities are misleading, or at the very least, need an asterisk. It does NOT act as Thread Border Router for third-party products. It does NOT allow you to add Matter devices which are not manufactured by Aqara. I also learned that Aqara is built upon the Tuya platform -- basically re-branded Tuya products just like Gosund, Meross, SmartLife, Feit, and hundreds of other "manufacturers." This was the first and is the last Aqara device I will ever purchase. I've included screenshots so you can see what you are getting into if you purchase this item.

I like that this incorporates Zigbee 3.0, Matter, Bluetooth, WiFi and Ethernet (with PoE) among other connectivity. Its about the size of an Apple TV, powers off a USB C PD connection or PoE and provides a great integration with Amazon Alexa and Apple Homekit - both of which I utilize. I also have this integrated with Matter into Home Assistant which then brings my accessories (U50 Door Lock, No Neutral Light Switches) into Home Assistant seamlessly.

I did have a lot of issues pairing with the Aqara FP2 Presence sensor - but then worked out that I don't really have a strong use case for a presence sensor as of now so returned it.

I would really like this hub to be able to pair with third party Zigbee 3.0 devices and not just third party Matter devices. I hope this comes in a future update. However, as of now, it works well. It is a bit on the expensive side, but I thought it was worth the premium for a bit of future functionality. There are other much cheaper Aqara hubs you could get if you need a basic one.

I never regret buying Aqara tools. But you need to be ready for perpetual manual syncing between your Homekit and Aqara. Most of sensors kept default names though I named them properly when initializing. Also rooms and device/censors names require sync every time you add anything new from Aqara. On the other hand, I do enjoy built-in temperature sensor and versatile IR-remote settings.
Maybe it works better with Google or Amazon, I haven't tested that.

I purchased the M3 regardless of the reviews it has received. The hub has been updated several times in the past few months and the updates have updated functionality and device support.

I migrated all my automations from m1s to M3. I power it from the PoE switch, and control everything with it, so far I love it.

I now use m1s for vacation setup as a temp solution to monitor rental homes while I live there.

Second Update: While I wouldn’t/couldn't go though the process below (initial Migration from M2 to M3), there was a firmware update today (May 17th) that claims to address the issue below.

[First Update: 2-to-3 stars because of customer service reached out — issues happen but proactive support seems to be rare in 2024 so I appreciate it enough to raise the rating. Also, after repairing everything to the new M3, it has been as stable as my M2.]

Summary: Transition from M2 to M3 has been a huge frustration.

Lesson/Tip: If your current setup works, don't change anything.

    Upgrade/Migration Fail(s):

I had two M2 Hubs, admittedly unnecessary, in my house. I bought two M3 Hubs to replace them. I went through the Migration option — which I thought was genius compared to how these usually go — but it was a fail.

Both Migrations seemingly worked. The sensors populated and were responsive for a couple hours. Thereafter, nearly half of the Child-Devices (sensors/lights) disconnected when the signal was "Excellent" and battery life was good.

The bizarre part is that half the sensors from each M3 disconnected (compared to one Hub's entire list of sensors being offline). There also wasn't a pattern (distance or type — unless I missed it).

I went ahead and migrated the M3 sensors from one to the other (all Child Devices now on one M3 Hub). That step included re-adding the sensors from the now-unusued M3 Hub. Everything worked... for an hour. Thereafter, the Migrated Child Devices (not just re-added) all went offline. So, after 3 Migrations and re-adding half my devices, the other half of the devices are now offline again.

I have been waiting for this hub since Q4 2023. While it had some hiccups according to the techies, it really did not have as much issue for me. I am new to the game and mostly have Aqara products. The installation was easy and so was the transition of hubs that I currently own (M2 and E1). I did have to reset a few items (2 door/window sensors and 1 light switch). All my animations still worked. The price was a little higher than expected, but i took advantage of the rollout discount. I may buy a second one for backup, but all of my stuff is very new (within the last 6 months). My M3 is in the center of my home on a niche that is about 8 feet above the floor. It is directly connected to the internet via the Google Nest mesh router. I have three evenly spaced so everything is well connected. I have about 30 Aqara products that work with no issue.

I have paired hue with matter and most devices have been paired easily. It is powered through a usb type c or with POE . The unit is a bit small and has great connectivity.

5.0 out of 5 stars M3 Hub von Aqara mit Thread in Apple HomeKit
Reviewed in Germany on July 23, 2024

    Hinweis:
