Product Description

Schnozzel Pumpbag is a bag with an attachment valve that allows a sleeping mat to be inflated quickly. Using a pump bag eliminates two unsavory things previously associated with sleeping mat inflation: Having to use lung power to inflate and the resulting accumulation of moisture inside the mat from vapor-laden breath. The latter can encourage (in any air-holding gear) the process of hydrolysis to break down coatings and laminates on the inner walls, so it’s good to avoid blowing into mats. Over the years, it’s evolved to be higher in volume, lighter, more compact, and more versatile (EXPED’s signature tinkering-to-perfection in action). Because it can be used as an ultralight waterproof stuff sack for clothing or a sleeping bag on the way to camp, its net weight is essentially zero.

I have one of the original EXPED mattresses with the integrated pump which I have always hated because it takes forever. Using a bag inflator is a much faster and efficient method. For my style mattress I removed the rubber nipple in the deflation valve, connect the end, and a few bags of air later my mattress is completely filled. The bag can also be used as a pillow and to pack your gear. As an avid backpacker I'm always looking for multi use items and this is a great one!

Pros: Lightweight, dual-purpose, easy to use, mitigates wear on your sleeping pad by reducing moisture inside the pad, which can lead to all sorts of problems like mildew and loss of insulation due to frozen/cutting water droplets.

Cons..with home-made adapter in place, the Schnozzel cannot be sealed to create a water tight fitting at the bottom of the bag...probably not an issue if using the bag as a pack liner, unless you dunk your pack in a river.

I had previously been using the Exped mini-pump to inflate my Thermarest Neoair Xlite, after I discovered that a small piece of bicycle tubing (road bike size 700c) fit over both the Exped fitting and the standard Thermarest inflator. It takes a little effort to stretch the tubing over the Exped fitting, so once in place, just leave it there. The other end of the tubing will then slide easily over the Thermarest inflator but still creates a seal. (I spent an hour at home depot trying to brainstorm an idea for an adapter, before finally having the revolution about the tubing...don't ever throw away your flatted tubes, because they can be re-purposed for a lot of things!)

The Exped mini-pump, while compact and lightweight, only serves one purpose. It is also a chore to fully inflate a pad (but still not as tiring as blowing air in yourself). This Schnozzel bag can be adapted in the same way described above and has the dual purpose of serving as my pack liner. This bag is well made with very lightweight silnylon, so there is little weight penalty. It is also very quick and easy to fully inflate the Neoair, taking only 1.5-2 bags to fill. Since I have switched to using silnylon bags as pack liners as opposed to pack covers, why not use the bag as a filling method as well? Thermarest sells an adapter to re-purpose a packliner/drybag in this way, but I've heard mixed reviews about it.
The bag is plenty big for stuffing all your things that may need to stay dry. This past weekend, I was able to stuff all my clothes, sleeping bag, hammock, and thermarest into the bag, with room to spare. The hole in the bottom allows air to escape, so you can get a really compressed fit inside your pack (I'm using this in lieu of a compression sack for my sleeping bag). The only downside to leaving the tubing installed on the inflator is that it can't then be pushed into the receptacle cap and sealed. I will probably devise a way to pinch the tubing, or just not worry about it since once it's compressed in you pack, it's highly unlikely water is going to get up the schnozzel unless the pack takes a real dunking. You could also just twist the schnozzel a few times and that should do the trick.
As with any pack liner, you will also have to take care not to let other things in your pack (like stoves/utensil) rub a hole or puncture the liner.

Happy trekking!

I purchased this to use with my ExPed SynthMat and it works as advertised. It fills the mats much more quickly that it would through the hand pump, and yes, it could double as a waterproof stuff sack. However, there are a couple things I don't like about it. First, it is made of extremely thin material. No doubt this was to shave ounces while backpacking, but I'm afraid that if the thing happened upon a stick or sharp rock, or was stuffed without much car into a pack, it would tear. Of course, it could be repaired using a patch kit- all ExPed mats come with one- but I wouldn't want to trust a descent rest of the integrity of quick, jerry-rigged solution. Another thing that I'm not overly fond of it is the fact that it's actually quick difficult to get the bag filled sufficiently with air. Yes, Ive watched the YouTube videos of the ExPed guy showing me just how easy it is, but I was never able to duplicate the efficiency he seemed to have in filling the thing before pressing the air into the mat. Perhaps with more practice, I too can become a master.

Overall, I like the PumpBag, and would purchase it again- the ease of filling my mats is well worth the price and extra ounces. But, this is not a bulletproof product and should be treated as such.

How large is large? How small is 60 liters? What is the shape? Ordered a large, too big, returned it and ordered a small. Aggravating to for me, costly for Amazon. BTW save a buck-ID of inflation hole is 9/16 inch - nicely fits OD of standard tubing. Easy to make an adapter from this to whatever size your mattress is. So large measures about 26in (66cm) long x about 20 in (50cm) diameter. Small is about 23 in (58cm) long x about 8in (20cm) diameter. 3 stars because of serious concerns about product from a vendor who seems to be out of touch with customers.

Worked great with my Exped Downmat 9, which has a built-in hand pump. This Bag can inflate the mat in 2 pumps, then I use the hand pump 5 or 6 times just to top off the mat. The bag connects to the exhaust valve, but the rubber disc in the exhaust valve needs to be pulled out (easy to do with your fingers. very compact when not in use. I am very happy with the bag.

It is handy and makes quick work of filling up their mattress. There is a bit of technique to use the minimum number of bag fills to finish inflating but is is much much quicker than other methods.

Does it fill quickly with air? Definitely.
Is it airtight? Oh yeah.
Does it do the job? Sure...

That said, this is definitely a curious case of too much of a good thing.
The bag is air tight. You can push the air into the pad for sure. But the effort it's going to take you with such a large bag is almost laughable. It's like playing whack-a-mole trying to get all the air out of the pump bag and into the pad.

Trying to set up camp, and using this thing in the middle of a precisely sized tent -> recipe for falling over laughing for sure. In hindsight, we would have preferred a bag maybe half the size, and just "refilled" it with air more often.

Does a great job at pumping up camping mats. A little big, but the mid size version wasn’t available. Packs down small. Well worth having one.

inflates my synmat9 with about 2 full bags, but closer to 3 bags out in the woods (seems harder to get it filled out there)

I also use it as the dry sack inside my backpack, and it's just massive

I use this to inflate a Thermarest sleeping pad ( no adaptor needed for original valve design) which it does more efficiently than Thermarest's own version. Makes a good ultralight dry bag too, kept my clothes dry when the pack got soaked in thunderstorms.
