Product Description

Sleep like camp royalty with the ultra luxurious Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D Self-Inflating Foam Camping Mattress. With couples in mind, the pad can be paired with a second MondoKing for a double sleeping pad. The pad offers an R-value of 8.0 for maximum year-round comfort thanks to thick thermal foam and StrataCore construction, which uses a continuous layer of thermal foam nestled between alternating ridges of air and foam (R-value measures the material’s ability to insulate; the higher the R-value, the warmer the sleeping pad). Perfect for car camping, expedition basecamps, RVs, and boats, it also makes an excellent guest bed at home. The stable mattress offers maximum stability, cushioning, and protection from rocks, roots, and uneven ground surfaces. All styles have dual valves that allow compressible foam core to expand and inflate when unpacked, and all styles mate perfectly with other Therm-a-Rest MondoKing mattresses with a similar style. Available in three styles: Equipped with the Standard Valve with the 2018 or 2019 model, or equipped with the TwinLock Valve the sleeping pad has dedicated "in" and "out" valves to make inflating and deflating the pad easier than ever. Standard Valve models are 4.0 inches thick inflated and include a stuff sack, and TwinLock Valve models are 4.5 inches thick inflated and include a stuff sack that can also be used as a pump sack (for easier, breath-free pad inflation). Made in the USA. Manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty.

I’m 6’4”, 280 lbs and prefer to sleep on my side. $30 mattress weren’t cutting it when camping with my family. I was excited about finding the highly reviewed Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D Self-Inflating Camping Sleeping Pad, so I bought the XXL 80x30 inch model. Unfortunately it didn’t self inflate and I didn’t want to blow it up with lung power. So I bought a Diswasher Disposer (7/8 to 5/8 connector) that perfectly attached a bellow foot pump to the mattress’ “IN” valve. Looking forward to the first night of sleeping on it.

The only thing I dislike about this, is that it didn't exist sooner. 😂 Easily the best camping air mattress I've ever used. It felt like sleeping in my own bed, because of the foam, it's great. I slept well, all night, on the ground, in the woods. No tossing and turning, and I felt rested in the morning. It's not loud or makes weird noises when you move around on it, and it feels soft to the touch instead of plastic or something. It will basically self inflate, but the bag it's stored in can be used as a pump, which is neat, but I bought the tiny pump for it. Inflates in under 10 minutes I think. It's a bit bulky, not for backpacking but if your worried about your back and want to camp, use this mattress, my 75yo dad approves. 👍 It seems well built and can support my fat butt so I recon it will yours too, and be comfy. 🥰

This had a reputation of being very comfortable, and I agree. I have it on a cot in a back room of my apartment. I've slept on it a few times, and find it almost as comfortable as my bed. I sometimes travel cross-country on adventures, and sleep in the back of my car, a Subaru Outback. I haven't tried it in the car yet, but I'm sure it will be more comfortable than things I've used in the past! It fits in half of the rear cargo area, with will work with some tricks & adjustments for my height (6 ft.). It could easily be moved from my car to a tent.

One trick to consider. don't overfill it. I found it much more comfortable after I took a bit of air out of it.

*** Update - ThermaRest got back to me and sent two replacements. The valves on the new pads work properly.

The INFLATION section of the TwinLock Valve Instructions states that “The one-way IN valve will prevent air from escaping”. This is not true. While inflating with the pump sack, when you get above approximately 50 % inflation, every time you pump air in, you can hear it come right back out after you stop pumping. This makes it very difficult to fully inflate. Also, if you put light pressure on the pad with your hand, you can hear the air coming out. I have two pads that I bought at the same time and both have the same issue.

I emailed ThermaRest 9 days ago with this issue to see what they’d say, but I still haven’t heard back from them.

Car camping only. I'm a side sleeper and this is great! Have been camping for years and as I've gotten older it's been harder to get a good rest on the thinner backpacking models I have used the past 25+ years

I almost didn't buy this, tried everything else, I'm NOT a thermarest fan, but for my application, this worked perfectly, is super comfortable, but you WILL need to buy a small battery powered inflator, the bag they give you is supposed to be a pump, but it'll take an hour to inflate using that. Deflating is much easier with an inflater, you can suck most of the air out of it that way. I like it, but it's way overpriced, and I tired of looking for a solution to my problem, this solved it. Now let's see how long before it gets a hole in it, which is my problem with every other thermarest product.

I have used this mattresses a couple of times, and it is now my favorite one for car camping. Since it is well insulated it keeps you warm in colder weather. The larger size means plenty of room, and it is comfortable. Seems very durable too, unlike the standard air mattress I used before that got multiple holes in it when the plastic got old after a few years. The Thermarests seem to last forever.

Just got it today. Took it out to inspect it and to see if it looked tough enough to hold up. All excited, I unscrew the "In" plug and--nothing. It still has the vacuum-wrinkled corners. I know the plug is open and functional because I could blow into it quite easily.

The reason I bought this thing is for the self-inflation. I know the last bit always takes a few pumps of the pump bag at the end, but I didn't want to have to take all the time and energy to fill it up from start to finish. That's time and energy better spent setting up the rest of camp.

I wish thermarest had been honest about this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars So comfortable but doesn’t actually self inflate
Reviewed in Canada on July 4, 2022

I used this for a 2 night trip and my tent was set up on some hard gravel ground. I had a very comfortable sleep both night. The firmness of the mattress is adjustable which was a big win. It didn’t make any noise as I rolled around and I was able to comfortably sleep on my side.

It is worth noting that I wouldn’t actually classify this as self inflating. It claims you can blow it up with its bag but you have to manually blow up the bag. Regardless it took me about 10 minutes to pack up and the same to pack down which is reasonable.

Comfort 10/10 Warmth is excellent and there is little chance of cold ground affecting sleep. Only drawback is size but that’s the trade off for a quality night of sleep. Better constructed than other sleep mats and screams quality which almost justified the price!

Outdoor camping, very comfortable, great back support, sleeps like better than my €800 H5 pocket spring orthopedic mattress at home. I have lower back problems for which I visit a chiropractor every month. Now I can travel again and sleep everywhere I want. Because this mattress is wide I was able to use a bolster pillow.
