- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025Style: USB-C AdapterVerified PurchaseI use this product for art, and it's absolutely amazing. It's comfortable to hold, smooth on the screen, and extremely useful. The pressure sensor when used on procreate is the biggest pro for me. It was definitely worth the purchase, especially as it comes with an extra tip as well as a 30 pin to usb-C adapter for easy charging and pairing. Its easy to connect, easy to use for drawing and writing, slim and sleek in design and generally a great investment.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2023Style: USB-C AdapterVerified PurchaseI got my iPad back in 2017 and really wanted to love it but it has never been very useful to me. I tried attaching a Bluetooth keyboard. That made it heavy and clunky and I was never able to know how much battery life the keyboard had so even if I wanted to take it along instead of my laptop I never knew if it would make it through the day.
Enter the Apple Pencil; my iPad now has so many great applications in my life it is the device I use 2nd most only behind my phone. I type really fast so for many years I almost never hand-wrote anything to the extent that writing had started to feel strange to me. Our brains need that creative, hand-to-eye interaction to help support and expand memory function and stimulate our creative side. Now I use my iPad to take hand-written notes pretty much every day. Apple's native apps work great with the Pencil and there are also some great 3rd party apps that are really valuable for keeping a virtual notebook, drawing, writing music, making story boards... pretty much whatever you can do with paper and writing instruments.
The Apple Pencil you need depends on the iPad you have so pay close attention to which one you need for your device. The version 2 has a few more features and I would have gladly paid a little more for it, but it won't work with my iPad. Still, I'm really happy with this one! Don't undervalue the ability to tell exactly how much battery your Apple Pencil has at any given time when you're considering whether to by a knock-off or spring for the real Apple brand. You charge the Apple Pencil using your iPad. There is an external adapter that I never use. I can get an additional 15 minutes of battery life from just 15 to 30 seconds of charging with the iPad and it doesn't drain the iPad battery. It goes from dead to fully charged in about 20 minutes. You won't get that from the knock-offs and you won't ever be able to know how much battery life a knock-off version has. You'll need to carry the charger and block, and have access to an outlet if it dies. If you're considering those, read the 2 and 3 star reviews, and also sort the reviews by most recent. People who leave 2 or 3 stars saw some value but clearly there was a significant flaw. Those reviews told me that the knock-offs might seem great when new, but they die quickly. Many of the 4 and 5 stars are reviewing something they just received. Sorting by newest helps you to spot sellers who make quality products at first, but then start taking short cuts once they have enough good reviews to make it seem great.
Amazon puts this one on sale regularly. I paid $80 for the Apple Pencil Gen 1. A few days later I saw it was $99 again but as I type this it's back down to $79.99 so watch and wait for the price to be low.
I was not sure that I would ever use the pencil as I am not an artist or song writer. I a felt a strong need to get back to hand-writing my notes but equally strong need to have them in digital form so my desk isn't covered with sticky notes that make no sense. Now I take a request for info from a client and turn it into a graphic I've marked up and texted to them and they love it. I can hand-write an email and send it as hand-writing. Older relatives LOVE this. Instead of one paper notebook I can never remember to take with me, I have multiple virtual notebooks organized by topics and they're so valuable that I remember my iPad always--across the house or across town.

It is easy to connect and improves the functionality of the iPad. It does have a strange way of charging which involves removing a little cap from the end of it which I see being very easy to lose. I just use my iPad at home so I don't worry about losing it but if you are traveling or using this at work/school that may be an issue.
Overall this is the official Apple Pencil (therefore the most compatible) which unleashes the iPad's full potential and I would highly recommend it (especially if it is on sale)

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025Style: USB-C AdapterVerified PurchaseIt's a little weird to use at first but it's a really good pen. I've used other pens and this one is the best. It has great accuracy when drawing and if you tilt it, it helps blend better. I use this for procreate to draw and it works extremely well with this app. Other pens don't have the tilting feature and the ones that say they do don't work as well as this pen. Pricing could be a bit cheaper and I wish there was a spot that is more grippy for ease of use and comfort but it's a all over great pen.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024Style: USB-C AdapterVerified PurchaseI’d wanted to get an Apple Pencil f o r e v e r but could never bring myself to spend $100+
So I waited and came across these refurbished ones on Amazon, and decided it was a worthwhile investment because of the money I could make from digital art products and the fact that the pencil will last long. The pressure sensitivity and realistic effect is well worth the money. It really enhances my digital art skills because it’s closer to using a real pencil on paper. The battery lasts forever and charges pretty quickly. And it’s handy that it plugs right into my iPad lightning port to charge. My pencil came like new in the original Apple box with all instructions and accessories (charger cord, adapters, extra pencil tips) and has no issues. I’ve tried off-brand styluses but nothing truly compares to an Apple Pencil. Would definitely recommend ✏️

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Tool for Creativity, But Limited Compatibility
Style: USB-C AdapterVerified PurchaseThe Apple Pencil (1st Generation) has been an invaluable tool in unleashing my creativity on my iPad. Its sleek design and precise functionality make it a remarkable stylus for digital drawing, note-taking, and more. The responsiveness and accuracy of the Pencil's tip provide a natural and immersive drawing experience, mimicking the feel of a traditional pencil on paper. The pressure sensitivity adds an extra layer of control, allowing for varying line thicknesses and shading effects. The seamless integration with iPad apps, such as Procreate and Notability, further enhances the overall user experience, making the Apple Pencil a must-have tool for artists and creatives.
One aspect to keep in mind is the limited compatibility of the 1st Generation Apple Pencil. It is only compatible with select iPad models, specifically the older iPad Pro, iPad Air (3rd generation), and iPad (6th and 7th generations). This means that if you own a newer iPad or iPad Pro, you may need to consider purchasing the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil for full compatibility. Additionally, the Pencil's cylindrical shape lacks an eraser feature or programmable buttons, which could have added more versatility and convenience to its usage. Lastly, the need to charge the Pencil by connecting it to the iPad's Lightning port may be a minor inconvenience, as it exposes the Pencil to potential accidental damage during charging.
In summary, the Apple Pencil (1st Generation) is a remarkable tool that unlocks a world of creativity on compatible iPads. Its precise and responsive performance, along with its seamless integration with various drawing apps, makes it an excellent choice for artists and note-takers alike. However, it's important to consider the limited compatibility with specific iPad models, as well as the absence of an eraser or programmable buttons. With its undeniable strengths and a few minor drawbacks, the 1st Generation Apple Pencil earns a solid four-star rating from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but Upgraded to Gen 2...
Style: USB-C AdapterVerified PurchaseI recently purchased the Apple Pencil (1st Generation)...While it worked fine for my needs, I ultimately decided to return it and upgrade to the 2nd generation pencil. However, I would still recommend the 1st gen pencil to others, considering its performance, functionality, and overall for just being more affordable.
The Apple Pencil (1st Generation) performed adequately, allowing me to draw and take notes with precision on my iPad. However, after considering the small price difference between the 1st and 2nd generation models, I opted to go for the newer version. The improvements and added features of the 2nd gen pencil made it a more appealing choice for me personally.
It's important to note that the 2nd generation Apple Pencil is only compatible with modern iPads. Therefore, if you're considering an upgrade, make sure to check the compatibility list to ensure your iPad is supported. This information is crucial to avoid any disappointments or compatibility issues down the line. You may be stuck with this 1st generation.
In conclusion, while the Apple Pencil (1st Generation) served its purpose adequately, I decided to upgrade to the 2nd gen pencil due to the small price difference and enhanced features. I would still recommend the 1st gen pencil to others, but be sure to check compatibility if you're considering the 2nd generation option.
