[Math For AI] 💬 In our ever-evolving modern world, the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) is pervasive. However, amid this technological marvel lies a fundamental truth: mathematics is the bedrock upon which AI is built. Previously, the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) on "Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence" 🎊 🎉 hosted by the Smale Institute for Mathematics & Computation concluded successfully at the Shanghai Expo Center on July 4th. The conference was chaired by Xuan Xiaohua, Executive Director of Smale Institute of Mathematics and Computation, and attended by distinguished mathematicians 📐 such as 🔸 Manuel Blum, the winner of the Turing Award in 1995; 🔹 Laurent Lafforgue, mathematician and permanent professor at IHES and winner of the Fields Medal; and 🔸 Stephen Smale, who won both the Fields Medal and the Wolf Prize. These top global mathematicians and scientists engaged in deep discussions on topics such as the mathematical foundations of machine learning and artificial intelligence, algorithmic research in artificial intelligence, AI for Science, and AI for Math, jointly exploring the latest research achievements and future development trends in the fields of mathematics and artificial intelligence. ● David Barber, Director of the UCL Centre for Artificial Intelligence --Using mathematical models to drive AI and make it better understand human language is a challenging yet potentially rewarding task. ● Jin Shi, Dean of Institute of Natural Science, Shanghai Jiao Tong University --An ideal mathematical model should perfectly integrate domain knowledge and physical laws, as such a model can more effectively solve complex problems. ● Michael Bronstein, the DeepMind Professor of AI at the University of Oxford --the limits of artificial intelligence are like the new goals that humans constantly pursue and set; it is a dynamic, ever-changing process with no end. ● Manuel Blum, Professor at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University and recipient of the Turing Award --Humanity may one day face destruction, but the emergence of artificial intelligence is not necessarily the inevitable driver of this fate. On the contrary, artificial intelligence could be the key to helping humanity avoid risks.

WEEKLY UPDATES 0909 Breaking✨✨:Time magazine has released its 2024 list of the most influential figures in artificial intelligence. The list features tech CEOs like Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, and Mark Zuckerberg. However, this year, the magazine has notably excluded Tesla CEO Elon Musk from its annual "top AI influencers" list. Regulation: 1. 9/5 World's First Global AI Treaty Signed💥 The first legally binding international AI treaty was opened for signature last Thursday by the countries that negotiated it, including the US, EU and UK. So far, Europe has been at the forefront of global AI legislation. The European Union's AI Act, which came into force on August 1, is the world's first comprehensive regulation of AI, while this AI Treaty focuses more on protecting the human rights, democracy and the rule of law. (https://lnkd.in/dwbifppV) 2. China and UN collaborate on AI capacity building at Shanghai workshop. A workshop jointly hosted by China and the United Nations to foster international cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) capacity building began in Shanghai on Sept 3. This event is organized by the Shanghai Municipal Government as a follow-up action as well as an active approach response from China to the "Global AI Governance Initiative"-<Shanghai Declaration>. The opening ceremony of the event was attended by representatives from nearly 40 countries. (https://lnkd.in/gMma3r4a) 💰Investment: 1. 「Global Insight」🌐“It’s a privilege to live at a moment in time where we can witness the beginnings of AI and contribute something to it.”📣 --Jürgen Schmidhuber, the father of generative AI, shared his groundbreaking work in deep learning and artificial intelligence in a recent interview. 1.Neural 🆚 Non-Neural AI: Schmidhuber distinguishes between neural networks, which have dominated recent AI advancements, and non-neural AI approaches, which are often symbolic and rule-based. He suggests that both types have their strengths and limitations and discusses the potential for hybrid systems that combine the best of both worlds. 📖 Takeaway: · Neural AI: Schmidhuber discusses the dominance of neural networks in contemporary AI, emphasizing their ability to learn from data without predefined rules. He acknowledges the success of these models in various applications, such as image and speech recognition. · Non-Neural AI: He highlights the strengths of non-neural approaches, often rooted in symbolic AI, typically based on logic and explicit rules, making them more interpretable. Schmidhuber suggests that future AI might benefit from integrating neural networks with symbolic reasoning to combine the strengths of both paradigms. 2. AI Reasoning: Schmidhuber argues that future AI systems may need to incorporate more complex reasoning mechanisms, potentially inspired by non-neural approaches, to achieve a higher level of intelligence. “Everything symmetric is compressible“; society is compressible because there must be prototype faces within the crowd, and you will encode them, along with many deviation generated. In his own words, “it's basically the world of all algorithms.” 3. Transformers 🆚 LSTMs: While Transformers have gained prominence due to their success in natural language processing and other tasks, Schmidhuber defends the continued relevance of LSTMs, especially for tasks involving sequential data and long-term dependencies. 📖 Takeaway: · LSTMs (Long Short-Term Memory networks): He explains their continued relevance in tasks involving sequential data and long-term dependencies. LSTMs were groundbreaking in enabling AI to process time-series data effectively. · Transformers: Despite the rise of Transformers in recent years, particularly in natural language processing, Schmidhuber argues that LSTMs still play a crucial role in certain applications. He suggests that while Transformers are powerful, they might not entirely replace LSTMs, especially where the latter’s strengths in handling sequences come into play. 4. Future of AI Research: Looking ahead, Schmidhuber speculates on the future trajectory of AI research. So far, the most of current reinforcement learning is still doing step-by-step simulation. He suggests that progress may require moving beyond purely neural approaches and integrating elements from symbolic AI to achieve more advanced reasoning and understanding.
