Earlier this month, 17 Young Employee Forum (YEF) representatives came together in Munich, Germany for a Global YEF Summit to share experiences, plan, and define the YEF. Representatives from all Buro Happold regions, UK, EU, ME, India, Asia Pacific and USA, reinforced the YEF's core purpose to foster 'social connection', enhance 'career development', and enable 'societal impact' for all employees at senior grade and below. The summit coincided with one of our Global Leadership Team's (GLT) periodically scheduled meetings, and the two groups were able to collaborate during site visits and workshops. Site visits included our recently completed SAP Garden Arena and the iconic Munich Olympic Stadium designed by Frei Otto, where conversations were centred around the YEF's role in the overall practice. The GLT invited YEF representatives to participate in workshops related to our Net Zero Routemap and to lead independent workshops centred around purpose, operations, structure, and future. They plan to share event ideas more regularly across our regions, authentically engage with our local communities, and progress towards a shared vision of a true globally connected network of young Buro Happold professionals. From historic structures to more contemporary developments, how could our buildings be retrofitted to stand the test of time for future generations? And how will they be used? These ideas, and more, are explored in our latest ‘Sandbox’ episode... Whether it is ‘refurbishment’ or ‘repurposing’, there are many terms to describe the concept of ‘retrofit’. With the UK’s net zero targets in mind, there are various ways in which the built environment can reduce its impact on the climate, with one example being retrofitting viable existing buildings, and material re-use (in other words, the circular economy). Retrofit is also crucial in preserving heritage buildings which are so vital to the identities of our towns and cities across the UK. With a whole host of other benefits to consider - from reducing possible risk, regenerating areas through considered interventions, to giving a building an entirely new purpose that opens it up to the community - retrofit has so many opportunities for everyone involved in the process. Episode 06 of ‘Sandbox’ - ‘Revolution in Retrofit: Beyond Bricks for a Greener Future’ explores these ideas, and many more. Joining our regular host Andy Duncan, are Buro Happold experts Ana Araújo, Partner and UK Facades Group Leader, and Darren Conboy, Associate, Structures. Our special guest in this episode is Gillian Darley OBE, a leading architectural historian, writer and broadcaster with a background in conservation, who has written books such as 'Excellent Essex', and featured on television with shows including Channel 4's 'Built in Britain' and BBC2's 'The Man Who Fought the Planners'. Use the links below to listen to the full episode and subscribe to the whole series; Sometimes we’ll tackle a subject head on, sometimes a sideways view - but always with curiosity, expertise and maybe even a dash of humour. ◾ Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/eDUUwtn5 ◾ Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eT5gyP-6 ◾ YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e65gF7ZK #BHSandbox #podcast #BuroHappold #UK #engineering #retrofit #buildings #cities #sustainability #materialreuse #circulareconomy #materiallibrary #demolition #refurbishment #repurposing

A healthy circular economy is considered a “win-win-win” for ESG. Buro Happold’s sustainability advisory team was engaged to identify and prioritise circular economy initiatives in a major city. Advisory experts created a customised circular economy framework that facilitated a thorough assessment of the current state and a benchmarking exercise for a major Middle East city. The team employed a multi-criteria assessment matrix to shortlist and prioritise recommendations, estimating both the environmental and economic impacts of each selected initiative. Extensive engagement with stakeholders was essential to the process. The combination of a top-down and bottom-up approach enabled us to provide a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the relationship between economic activity and the environmental impact in the city. This month marks two years since Battersea Power Station re-opened, establishing a vibrant mixed-use riverside neighbourhood on a 42 acre, former industrial brownfield site. For 25 years, Buro Happold was at the forefront of the extensive and complex restoration programme that transformed this sleeping giant into the contemporary icon we see today. That’s why, this October, we’re taking a moment to reflect on our work, and celebrate being part of one of Europe’s most significant and exciting developments. Crucial to the success of this project was the close collaboration of a brilliant project team that included Battersea Power Station, WilkinsonEyre, chapmanbdsp, and Mace. The camaraderie that was forged in the crucible of the Power Station informed our bold engineering approach, and the legacy that we carry forward to our projects today. “What we took out of Battersea Power Station was the expertise and experience to look at very complicated problems, break them down into manageable chunks to develop well thought through, innovative solutions,” says Franck Robert, Buro Happold partner and UK structures lead. Sam Youdan, Director, Buro Happold, adds: “We didn’t know all there was to know about Battersea Power Station on day one. But we have the experience of going on that journey, of managing the risks and unlocking the opportunities, and what a destination it has become.” Read '25 Years in the Making: The Restoration of Battersea Power Station': https://buro.im/3BY2mLp

As the UN biodiversity summit COP16 continues in Colombia, we reflect on the role of nature in the built environment – and the impact Buro Happold can have. Middlewood Locks is a truly transformational regeneration of a former brownfield site in Salford, UK, building a vibrant new community around a formerly abandoned stretch of canal. The 25-acre mixed-use development, situated where the two cities of Salford and Manchester meet, will provide 2,215 new homes and create 900,000ft2 of new commercial space, incorporating offices, hotel, retail and leisure uses. Our engineers have been involved with this project since 2012, when we were first appointed to provide an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). It was necessary to look at the whole of the site, which had a complex heritage of former industrial uses, to ensure the ground was safely prepared for habitation. We worked carefully within a strategy that dictated a net zero removal of material from the site to lessen any environmental impact of the development. How can ‘nature-based solutions’ support the delivery of a necessary degree of climate resilience, as we address problems caused by the climate crisis? How the built environment addresses the impacts of the climate crisis is a complex picture, but one that can begin to be untangled by using nature. Nature-based solutions are part of a wider suite of options that allow the built environment to be more resilient in the face of climate change; it is a broad term that refers to any intervention that uses the power of nature to provide solutions to a problem. Planning has been approved for the redevelopment of National Museums Liverpool’s International Slavery Museum and Maritime Museum. Partnering with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios), Buro Happold provided inclusive design services for Stage 3, taking the project up to planning, and will continue to be involved in Stage 4 once funding has been secured. Thomas Kirby, Senior Inclusive Environments Consultant, Buro Happold says "This project involves the refurbishment of two Grade 1 listed dock buildings, one of which currently houses the museum. It will greatly improve access with two new Changing Places Toilet facilities and new passenger lift access to some floors for the first time and redesigned exhibits, all of which will allow more people to visit and enjoy the museum." Read more about this project in Place North West here: https://buro.im/4hymvZ5 Buro Happold is also supporting a separate initiative with National Museums Liverpool to improve access to the Canning Dock, working closely with the team and the council’s access officer to meet Liverpool City Council’s enhanced access requirements. #inclusivedesign #museum #accessibility #Liverpool

As the UN biodiversity summit COP16 continues in Colombia, we reflect on the role of nature in the built environment – and the impact Buro Happold can have. The regeneration of Mayfield Park, Manchester, has transformed a derelict area of central Manchester into a vibrant new community with sustainable ecology at its core. The Mayfield Regeneration is centered around the city’s first new public park in more than a century. Buro Happold’s work with U+I, on behalf of The Mayfield Partnership, continues to transform the former industrial site in the heart of the city into a world-class commercial, retail, entertainment and residential hub. Buro Happold has provided a vast array of services for this transformational development, but a particular success comes in the form of our ecology, biodiversity and environmental consultancy work. This work has created an environment that has seen a plethora of wildlife, including kingfishers and brown trout, return to the River Medlock. The delivery of the masterplan is phased over 10/15 years, bringing a bold reimagining of urban living that reconnects the citizens of Manchester to the natural world throughout their daily lives. https://lnkd.in/eDkkkEbk #BuroHappold #Engineering #Consultancy #Advisory #BuiltEnvironment #Construction #ESG #Nature #Ecology #Biodiversity #Manchester #COP16
