We are often contacted by companies that are still early in their product design & development projects and need to estimate their cost, so they ask us for production RFQs. Of course, that’s understandable. They need to plan for the amount of money to raise, as well as the timelines they need to work to. They usually write something of the sort to us: “Before moving forward with design work, I’d like to obtain quotes to estimate the cost to get a prototype, and also to know about the production unit cost.” The problem is, when it comes to unique (new-to-the-world) products with mechanical and/or electronic parts, this is far from realistic.

One of the root causes of many quality issues is poor communication, and this is particularly true in China. When a new product is developed, a lot of work is often needed with the suppliers of components and materials. They are an integral part of the success of the project. In many cases, we run a feasibility study to reduce risks. Here's why.

One of our tooling engineers patiently manually checks the fit of the tooling by looking at the red ink that shows where it has been in contact with its other half. Any areas where contact isn't optimal and he will manually finish the tool to ensure perfect contact when it is used in the injection mold press. This process shows why years of tooling expertise are required to produce tooling that meets your requirements, is durable, and will result in little to no waste when used. When deciding whether to opt for a production mold (typically in steel) or a prototype mold to enable you to validate and test your plastic parts, it’s crucial to weigh the pros and cons. A prototype mold offers a more cost-effective and flexible solution, especially for projects in development or the very early stages of production, where large volumes aren’t yet needed. However, the question remains: is a prototype mold right for you?

Pilots follow a checklist before they fly. Same thing for doctors & nurses. But, for some reason, I see very few Chinese factories follow an assembly problem prevention checklist that can help them avoid problems during production before they make a new product (for the first time). Here are some important points any assembly factory should confirm before production begins in order to avoid assembly problems. (It is not very different from the points we typically check in a ‘production readiness audit’ for an electro-mechanical product.)
