ABSTRACT One of the important criteria determining the sustainability of an industrial activity i... more ABSTRACT One of the important criteria determining the sustainability of an industrial activity is the ecological acceptability of the processing methods. Tanners throughout the world are looking for alternative eco friendly tanning systems. In the present work, metal free tanning system using a combination of Tetrakis Hydroxymethyl Phosphonium Sulphate (THPS) and Tara has been developed. This combination tanning is expected to be an effective eco-friendly mineral free tanning. The shrinkage temperature of the leathers obtained is 88 degrees C. The tanning system is versatile in terms of processing both upper and garment leathers. The physical strength characteristics and organoleptic properties of the leathers obtained are comparable to that of chrome tanned leather. Environmental impact assessment shows that there is reduction in total solids when compared to control chrome tanning. Tara as a combination tanning agent not only improves the leather properties but also can act as a scavenger of free formaldehyde present in THPS tanned leather.

In this study, green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was performed by a sunlight irradiat... more In this study, green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was performed by a sunlight irradiation method using the Borassus flabellifer fruit extract as a reducing agent. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU)-loaded GG capped AuNPs (5FU-G-AuNPs) was prepared. The nanoparticles was further characterised by UV-visible spectra, particle size analysis, zeta potential, SAED, HRTEM, and XRD. The MTT assay results showed the suitability 5-FU-G-AuNPs. In this study, 5-FU-G-AuNPs exhibited potential cytotoxic and apoptotic effects on (MiaPaCa-2) cell line.

The influence of various fatliquors and syntans on the gloving properties of leather made from sh... more The influence of various fatliquors and syntans on the gloving properties of leather made from sheep skins were investgated systematically. Combinations of six different types of fatliqors and four syntans were studied for their influence on the gloving properties viz., run, softness, strength properties and other subjective properties like smoothness and stretch. It is observed that the combination of fatliquors based on sulfited fish oil, sulfochlorinated paraffin wax and lecithin along with glutaradyhyde and polymeric retanning agents result in leathers with better gloving characteristics.

Collagen, a unique connective tissue protein finds extensive application as biocompatible biomate... more Collagen, a unique connective tissue protein finds extensive application as biocompatible biomaterial in wound healing, as drug carriers, cosmetics, etc. A study has been undertaken to stabilise Type-I collagen of rat-tail tendon using plant polyphenol (Acacia Mollissima) in the presence of an acrylic polymer. It has been found that collagen fibres pre-treated with acrylic polymer followed by the treatment with Acacia Mollissima exhibited an increase in hydrothermal stability by 25 degrees C. Infrared spectroscopic studies display the changes in the spectral characteristics of native and treated collagen films. Transmission electron microscopic and circular dichroic studies provide an insight into the understanding of the improved stabilisation of collagen, due to treatment with acrylic polymer and plant polyphenols. The study is expected to enhance the biomaterial applications of collagen tissues.
